Upton Warren (52 Viewers)

Moors today

Snowy and cold surprising amount of birders around mostly Tuesday work party crew and a few hard core Friday crew. :t:
I was hoping a bit of hard weather movement but apart from a GCG and a very brief frustrating view of a flyover probable Red Breasted Merg, it was as you were.
There was a small westerly movement of winter thrushes but again only a couple of snipe.
Species Count Moors.
Mute swan 31 . WHOOPER SWAN. Cormorant 37. Little egret 2. Grey heron. Shoveler 40. Teal 26. Gadwall 5. Shelduck. Pochard 14. Tufted 15. Coot 175. Water rail 4.

Great spotted w 2. Fieldfare 20. Redwing 15.

Been a good few years since we have had an accepted merganser record - was the last bird the redhead that dropped onto the water whilst the work party was out on the Flashes?

Matt S further reports from the Moors Pool:

Two thirds frozen - 60 Mallard 5 Gadwall, 62 Shoveler, 31 Mute Swan, 1 Whooper Swan, 140 Coot, 18 Cormorant, 9 Pochard, 70 Teal, 1 Herring Gull, 100 BH Gull, 4 Tufted Duck, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Snipe, 1 Little Egret

Spent around 90 minutes at the Moors this afternoon. Nothing else to add really apart from a Cetti's Warbler that was calling and jumping around on the snow close in front of the West Hide.

There are currently 98 species that have been recorded each and every year since the annual report was first produced in 1984. The last ten birds that have fallen off this list comprise Whinchat (2016), Little Owl (2014), Ruddy Duck (2010), Redstart (2005), Willow Tit (2002), Yellowhammer (2001), Turtle Dove (1999), Red-legged Partridge (1997), Spotted Redshank (1997) and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (1997).

With just three weeks left in the year we are in danger of now deleting Goldeneye to the list :-C We have come close to blank years before with records of just single one-day birds in both 1985 and 2012. The species is variable in its occurrence but is certainly less common now than say the early and mid 1990s.

Tuesday's work party CANCELLED

B :)With predicted extreme cold weather overnight Monday to Tuesday of -12 degrees C we have cancelled the work party on safety grounds. The car park will still probably be covered in snow and many roads will be icy. I will endeavour to get there for some birding.

The last work party of the year will take place on 19th December hopefully see you all then. We will have a break until 9th January 2018! So to all the Tuesday Crew ......Happy Christmas and a great new year. And thanks for all your help and cakes:t:

Previous losses have followed sustained periods of cold weather e.g. a week plus of sub zero (daytime) temperatures. With the thaw setting in this evening hopefully they will be OK.

Very glad to hear. I remember some years back (2007?) when we lost them all and it took several years to build up population again. Pam

This morning at Moors

Just spoken to Bobby P and Paul M at the MOORS. .
There are two small open areas where the swans 32 mute and whooper are rammed in. No Cettis heard but then they don't sing a lot at this time of year - usually just contact calls Paul heard one at West Moors Sunday.
A couple of water rails performing well.. But generally same as Saturday. :t:
A good job the work party was cancelled although 5 of the crew are on site including Bobby P. Jim B. Julie W . Kim W and Paul M
