Grafham Water 13 July ; at least 8 Yellow-legged Gulls around the reservoir . Also an influx of Little egrets, seem to be everywhere - must have been a good year for the local breeders?

Grafham Water 27 July; Turnstone on the dam and several adult Yellow-legged Gulls. Single Common Scoter male off the dam mid afternoon before flying off towards the sea....

Plus Whimbrel

Grafham Water 3 Aug : a lot of gulls around the reservoir; some very approachable Yellow-legged Gulls on the dam early am https://www.flickr.com/photos/167699723@N04/48446055772/in/album-72157705544150001/
Also a juvenile Mediterranean Gull at dusk at 20:30 from the Fishing Lodge in failing light; glad of the high ISO

Grafham Water 30 Sep : Great White Egret, Little Gull and a presumed Common Tern juv plus several Yellow-legged gulls. Single Dunlin and 3 Ringed plovers

Grafham Water 6 Oct : 4 Great White Egrets still, moving around the entire reservoir including the north end of the dam corner and in front of the sailing club. Two birds are remain close to each other and the 3rd and 4th often separate for long periods.
A Rock Pipit on the dam and a Swallow this morning in the rain.

Grafham Water 12 Oct: 4 Great White Egrets still, female Scaup off the dam, note the extent of white on the wings https://www.flickr.com/photos/167699723@N04/48886734508/in/album-72157705544150001/ Must be close to what would be expected in Lesser?

In every respects, a standard looking female Greater Scaup, but the interesting wing-pattern is, and as you say, rather Lesser Scaup-like. I assume this is just extreme variation within the species (?).

Nice photos of the Great Egrets :t:

Thanks for your thoughts; I will dig out some previous female Scaup flight shots if I have any.

The GWE’s have occupied much of my time ; still waiting for the perfect shots from a hide but its a tricky game of wait and see. Still a spectacular bird despite becoming rather common nowadays.

Grafham Water 26 Oct pm ; female Scaup off north end of the dam. Little else in continuous rain all afternoon but 1 Common Sandpiper and 4 Redshanks and only 2 Little Egrets in the fishing boat harbour.
