Hi Des - was that a mistype re Gadwall young? 5 appears to be the highest number have been reported during July.

This might be one of the few years that Common Snipe is recorded every month.

We are at the halfway point of the month and the list for July (traditionally the quietest month outside of the winter period) is already an impressive 84 species. Potential additions include (year ticks in bold):-

Common Scoter (inland movement over the last two days), Garganey, Pochard, Red Kite, Pheasant, Dunlin, Wood Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Common Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Med Gull, Black Tern, Tawny Owl, Barn Owl, Little Owl, Feral Pigeon, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Cuckoo, Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Redstart (time to start checking the hedges at the Flashes), Mistle Thrush, Garden Warbler, Coal Tit, Spotted Flycatcher, Nuthatch, Siskin (a few moving at present), Yellowhammer

There were a number of people waiting in the water rail hide yesterday hopeful for a kingfisher to show, sadly they were disappointed. |:(||:(|
While waiting there it was the perfect opportunity to photograph a few other gems.
A great crested grebe flew by on the far side by the east hide (first one I've ever seen in flight) as well as a juvenile strutting his stuff nearby. There was also a sedge (thanks to Roger for confirming the ID) grabbing dinner in the greenery to our left and finally a young moorhen balancing on a stick in front of us, not quite a kingfisher but hey, he was stood on a stick!3:)
