It was good to see some Black Terns again today. Attached are some of my feeble efforts from Wednesday... if they don't convince my other half that I need that really expensive lens, nothing will!

A flurry of new species since last Saturday sees the year list advance to 129 - additions comprise Spotted Flycatcher, Hobby, Grey Plover, Black Tern, Arctic Tern and Greenshank.

Black Tern

Wednesday's flock of 11 Black Terns on the Sailing Pool was the largest occurrence since 19 were present at the Moors Pool on the 7th May 2008.

These numbers are well short of the reserve's peak count of 64 birds which was seen on the 11th September 1992. During the early morning the total of birds at the Moors Pool steadily increased to reach a single flock of 53 birds (predominately adults) by 8:30 am. As birds came and went the total number rose to at least 64 by the end of the day. This represented only a small part of an unprecedented movement over several areas of the country, with the West Midlands recording 1,952 birds during the day on the back of strong westerly winds. These numbers included 350 at Draycote Water, 300 at Blithfield Reservoir, 250 at Belvide Reservoir, 205 at Westwood Pool, 194 at Coton Pools, 100 each at Bittell Reservoir and Earlswood Lakes, and 69 at Wilden.

There are three other notable counts of twenty or more birds comprising 28 on the 2nd May 1990 (as part of another massive passage across the Midlands), 26 on the 15th September 1974 and 20 on the 1st May 1965.

JTB reports the 3 Black Tern on the Sailing Pool this morning (Dave J advises they were on the Moors Pool earlier).

At the Flashes there is 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Dunlin, 1 Common Sand, 31 Avocet, 3 Oystercatcher and a first summer Common Gull as per JTB. The pair of Teal are still at the Moors Pool as per Dave J.

John reports that the first Avocet chick has emerged today at the Flashes whilst all 11 Lapwing chicks remain present and intact.

The Black Terns were often calling and flying fairly high this evening, so it was no surprise to see them fly of north at 7:42. First time I have heard the species calling. Also 7+ Common Tern, 4 OYC, 1 LRP, 1 Common Sand, 1 Avocet. BHG X Med Hybrid.
Flashes, Ringed Plover and Dunlin still

Dave J reports all waders at the Flashes disturbed by a low flying hot air balloon - Whimbrel headed off south east but the Ruff did return.
