Banned in National Parks
So, they are good to learn bird recognizing by voice, but not good for birds if used to provoke or attract them.
Actually in forests most of birds are hidden behind foliage and knowing their songs is crucial. And they sing mostly in spring, later forest is silent and overgrown by plants.
Some of species are also very similar, like many of those living in rushes. And they differ almost only in calls.
The Corn Crake is almost always hidden in grass ...
I have heard, that ornithologists play recorded calls to detect owls, perhaps Eurasian Pygmy Owl or Boreal Owl, but it makes such birds insensible to real calls. Or something like that. Is it true ?
They also detect this way some of crakes (Porzana). Perhaps such artificial voices mislead also these birds.
Taking picture of Bearded Reedling is probably much easier using this method.
Severity of such impact depends obviously on number of birders playing recordings in given area.
