Am taking a trip in the Summer to the IOW, will only have the odd few hours here and there spare for specifically birding, are there any must go places?

Are you going to the festival? Me too ... so this serves both us (as I will have only a few hours here and there too)

Hi

Sorry about the thread-mining but I've not been on here for ages...
I live on the Isle of Wight and, while birding is quiet during the summer months, Parkhurst Forest and Alverstone Mead - especially the Mead, where there is a hide and the squirrels are very approachable - are good for Red Squirrels. Newtown is the place for birds and a hide is open to the public.
Are you coming by car or public transport? Alverstone is not that easy to reach by public transport but is walkable from Sandown or Newchurch via a cycle track. Newtown is reachable by bus, although you'll need to walk from the main Newport-Yarmouth road (get off at Shalfleet). Other places worth checking out are Culver Down, Ventnor Downs (where there is a chance of seeing Dartford Warbler, as there is on Headon Warren in the west od the Island, near the Needles), Brading Marsh and Yarmouth Marsh.

There's a lot of info on local birder Derek Hale's website, he also has an up-to-date sightings page. Ah, I see Gareth has mentioned Derek's site.

Thanks for your reply, will check those places out.

I will have access to a car so that is not an issue. I will be there the first week in July.

Thanks :)
