No Ruff this morning as per Phil W but one currently present at the Flashes & 1 LRP, 4 Green Sand; 2 Little Egret briefly this morning as per Chis T. 29 Little Grebe (incl this year's chicks) at the Moors Pool and Hobby reported. Newly emerged GC Grebe chick on the Sailing Pool.

Thursday 13th August 1400-1810

Not quite the afternoon I had hoped for with the rain not commencing until 5pm; hopefully some heavy overnight downpours will yield suitable rewards for John and co tomorrow.

MOORS POOL
3 Lapwing, 3 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, c160 Mallard, 45 adult / fledged Tufted Duck + various aged ducklings, 1 GC Grebe, 29 Little Grebe (c16 adults, c8 juvs and 5 young), c190 Coot, 19 Moorhen, Water Rail, 18 Greylag Geese, 46 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swan + 2 cygnets, 7 Cormorant, 3 Grey Heron, 1 LBB Gull, c160 BH Gull, 1 Common Tern + 2 chicks, Hobby reported, GS Woodpecker.

SAILNG POOL

2 Tufted Duck, c90 Mallard, 2 Mute Swan, 77 Canada Geese, 14 Coot, 2 Common Tern, 2 Kingfisher, 3 GC Grebe including a pair in the NE corner with 1+ newly emerged chick.

FLASHES
10 Avocet, 6 Green Sand, 1 Ruff - probably a juv male based on size (none reported present this morning as per Phil W), 1 Snipe, 76 Lapwing, 24 Teal, 10 Shoveler, 1 Tufted Duck, c40 Mallard, 1 Gadwall, 10 Coot, 14 Moorhen, c50 BH Gull, 37 Stock Dove, Raven over, GS Woodpecker.
2 Little Egret briefly this morning before flying west as per Chris Thomson

No Swift noted today.

The crop field to the north east of the Flashes was being cut today. In recent years the resulting stubble has resulted in impressive numbers of geese, Mallard, Stock Dove and corvids.

Phil, there appeared to be another young Tern in one of the boxes. I take it that it wasn't on view yesterday.

No mate, just the two chicks from the final box in the furthest right hand box. Would have thought all the middle brood should have fledged unless this is the bird John previously described as being attacked.

This bird could only be seen from the west hide.

I managed to get 2 record shots of the 39 common terns and the small ruff could be a male ( still a ruff though), even though the light and rain was appalling .

Yesterday's Ruff appeared to be larger, more buffier and lankier than today's based on John's photo (albeit taken in poor light)

Today at the Moors from east hide, the scrape was full of loafing ducks and geese, plus a juv water rail perched high up on the rees in the 'hook'.

Were there any signs of Otter activity today John? Yesterday the ducks were very nervous, often scooting across the water as if to avoid a threat at the water's edge

Flashes Survey 18th August

This coming Tuesday there will be disturbance at the Flashes from 10am. The Trust. surveyors and myself will be walking around the lagoons to inspect the Saltmarsh and expanding phragmites beds. The group will be able to then plan the remedial action required. So opologies for any inconvenience caused. But we need real action to sort out the problems and this is the start.
