Is this a Chinese Sparrowhawk? Perhaps a juvenile?

But juvenile Japanese can look quite similar, although it seems to be more lightly-marked on the breast and have a less distinct hood and more of a brow:

The eye looks quite dark though?

Yes John, a juvenile Chinese. Note the dark (grey) orbital ring which is yellow in Japanese. Also the more extensive rufous markings are rather typical of juvenile Chinese.

Grey orbital ring - mental note made. I missed that when I was comparing images.
