Help don't know much about binoculars (1 Viewer)

Hi and welcome to Birdforum. Those are some very low power binoculars. Both might be good or not depending on quality, one will bring you a little be closer to what you are viewing and will show you a little bit less, most likely, of the field of view around the object you are viewing.

:hi:Hi Yolokat,

I see you are in Western North Carolina. If there are any sporting goods stores near you visit them to see if they have inexpensive binoculars for sale. The first thing to remember is do not buy a "Zoom" power binocular that promises to give you something like 7 power through 15 power. They are all junk!

Understand that you won't get any decent binoculars for much under $80.00 or so.

So look for 8 power binoculars that are designated 8x30 or 8x42. They are the easiest to use. Nikon makes some inexpensive ones in their "Pro Staff 7 S" line that cost from $100.00 up to $250.00 that will suit your purpose so try them out if you can.

If you can't find them you can also order them direct from Nikon. See the link below to see what they look like.

Nikon also sells small, compact binoculars that cost from $80.00 and up to $120.00. Stay with 8 power binoculars if you can. Here is another Nikon link showing them:

Wich is better 4x30 or 5x30

Hi Sarah and welcome to BF! :hi:

Not sure what your budget is, but for birding, Bob has mentioned some good optics in the Nikon products! If you can get to a Cabelas, Bass Pro Shop or even an Academy store, getting your hands (and eyes) on various optics will help you to make decisions on what suits You best!

Believe your birding interest will be better served with either a 6X30 or 8X30 binocular. My recommendation for quality at a good price would be the Leupold Yosemite BX-1 porro binocular line. The 6X30 and the 8X30 will make Great entry level optics that are waterproof, offer great views, are light and carry lifetime warranties!

Let us know what optics you discover that you like and works well for you!
