Hi, Stephen! :hi:

I've just seen this great list of Hummingbirds you've got! :bounce: I've never seen the Black Jacobin or a male Black-crested Coquette but Snowcap, Purple-crowned Fairy and Fiery-throated Hummingbird are certainly among my top-five ones seen. Which are the other two? I don't know... probably the Violet Sabrewing (what a stunning bird it is!!!) and the Stripe-tailed Hummingbird. Well, and the tiny Coppery-headed Emerald is not bad either! ;)

Thank a lot for sharing your list! :t: Cheers!

Thanyou Marian !
Yes it is very difficult coming up with a top-5 , they are all so amazing . The Coppery-headed Emerald is such a fantasic bird !
Black Jacabin is one I saw in Brazil but never photographed , actually it was a miserable rainy day but I saw several in the rain, I wish I had more time viewing them in better conditions. I liked Brown Violetear from Costa Rica alot too !!
..and oh yes Violet Saberwing ! and the Green Hermit was neat too !!!

Thanks Robert ! That bird showed up in mid November in a town near me and I had to go see it. Do you have three or four breeding species near you including Calliope ?

Hi Stephen,

We have 4 breeding hummingbirds in Washington State. The state is divided, biogeographically, along the crest of the Cascade Mountains - wet to the west, and dry to the east (the extremes are phenomenal, from temperate rain forest near the coast, 200+" of rain per year, to bonified desert in the east, 7" or less of rain per year). Here's the scoop on our breeding hummers:

1. Anna's -- Year round, and breeding, in Puget Sound lowlands of Western Washington (see: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=110377)

2. Rufous -- Migratory, Western WA and across the northern corridor to Northeast WA, breeding and summer only (winters in Mexico).

3. Black-chinned -- breeding and summer, only ... Eastern Washington.

4. Calliope -- breeding and summer only, Eastern Washington, but migratory wanderers on western slopes of Cascade Mountains.

So, kudos to you for a New Jersey Calliope. Very fine sighting, good tick.

Cheers,
Robert
