Hi all

Have finally finished going through my archive of moth images. Garden list now stands at 71 (was at 35 just over a fortnight ago - thanks for all the help). I'm now left with a few images that I'm still not certain about. This first batch I think I know the ID of;

1) Mottled Rustic
2) Large Yellow Underwing
3) Common Marbled Carpet
4) Common Wainscot
5) Twin-spot Quaker

Please confirm, or correct :)

cheers
martin

My guesses would be:
1) not sure -- possibly flounced rustic?
2) lesser yellow underwing
3) CMC
4) common/smoky wainscot
5) looks like twin-spot quaker - when did you see it?

Before I start, if at least a month is given, would make things more straight forward, not to mention size.

1) Mottled Rustic
2) lesser yellow underwing
3) CMC
4) With the sharp apex, I'm suggesting Southern Wainscot
5) twin-spot quaker

Sorry about that. Thought about adding month and then completely forgot.
Will also take photos with a rule in shot from now on.

Anyway;

1) early Sep
2) early Aug
3) mid Sep
4) mid Jul
5) early Apr
6) early Aug
7) mid Jul
8) early Apr
9) early Apr
10) early Apr
11) late Aug
12) late Aug
13) early Sep
14) late Apr
15) mid Jun

My best guesses for the two that ID hasn't been suggested for yet;
6) Dotted Clay
13) Small Square-spot/Square-spot Rustic? (I actually think it looks more like the Neglected Rustic in my field guide but I suspect that would be very unlikely in my garden).

Looking at all of these again, I can see why the LesserYU's are what they are. The LargeYU should have been obvious as well although it was the blue colouration that threw me. Haven't seen one that colour either before or since.

Clouded Drab is a new one for my list, as is Rustic Shoulder-knot. If 6) is a Dotted Clay that would be a new one for me as well. Can the Wainscot be positively ID'd or does the hindwing need to be seen as well?

No 6 looks like another Yellow Underwing to me, probably comes again.

Less sure about no 13 but that could be a Yellow Underwing too.

#13 is presumably a Lesser Yellow Underwing - definitely not a Neglected Rustic.

I think Angus is right on southern wainscot, though I've never seen one. I believe that the 'ruff' on the 'forehead' is diagnostic. What do others think?

Southern Wainscot would be a new species for Northumberland! I've attached another view of the same moth, as well as images of three other wainscots taken the following day, one week later and 11 days later. I assumed the other three were Common Wainscot although now I'm not so sure.
