We saw this hawk near the granaries in Progreso. Seems to have a white cheek and eyebrow but the tail bands seem too narrow for Gray hawk. Tail seems wrong for Red-shouldered judging from the field guide.

Thank you.

Juvenile Gray Hawk in my opinion. The tail seems right for a juvenile Gray Hawk of the northern subspecies which is the one that occurs in south Texas.

Thank you. I was leaning toward Gray Hawk because of the face. Now I know about the tail, too. Hope I get to see an adult soon.

To my knowledge, with split of Grey-lined Hawk, Grey Hawk is monotypic.

Asturina plagiata Schlegel, 1862, Veracruz, Mexico.
This species and B. nitidus sometimes placed in Asturina, partly because of distinctive moult pattern. Probably closest to B. ridgwayi and B. lineatus; previously considered to form a clade with these and Rupornis magnirostris, but latter found to be basal to all buteos, and this group may be more closely allied to Leucopternis than to Buteo. Until recently was commonly considered conspecific with B. nitidus, but differs in its plain vs barred grey crown, nape, back and wings (3); uppertail-coverts white vs grey with white tips, resulting in bold vs narrow white band on base of uppertail (2); longer call, without sudden drop in pitch in middle of note (2, perhaps 3). Monotypic.
