Upton Warren (51 Viewers)

Black-headed Gull yellow "2RNJ" was noted last year at the Moors Pool on the 2nd and 16th September; it was ringed as a juvenile at Fishers Green, Essex on the 16th October 2016. I suspect I also had this gull at the Flashes earlier this year on the 3rd September.

I also saw this bird a couple of weeks ago in the flashes roost. Think I wrote it in the book?

At the umpteenth attempt to get it to a manageable size for posting female mandarin duck this pm from West Hide. Just possible from East Hide but the gap through the bushes was only just enough even with spot focussing! Not even going to try to reproduce it.

The Whoopers seemed well ensconced and the various little birds were happy to feed off their efforts. Wonder if they will stay longer than the Bewick did? Plenty of food by the look of it.

Interestingly none of the three seem to be ringed. Looked stunning in the evening sunlight .

Walkies

One of the few times they seemed to be upright. At least I can now tell the difference between a Whooper backside in the air and a Mute one. Must look up the old Bewick pics and see if I can see another difference!

Seven Whooper Swans

Record shot of Whooper Swans at The Moors today.

If you wait long enough you get the a picture of the Whooper Swans showing seven heads rather than a mixture of heads and tails.

Meadow Pipits.

This amuch reduced size and quality just to fit it on here. I don't know if Windows 10 facility is more restrictive or its me.

Anyway the purpose of putting this on was to show the difference in colour depth of two of the meadow pipits that we saw today. "Collins" suggests the paler one is a summer worn breeder and the darker one is a fresh autumn one.

Anyway a big thanks to Tony B for pointing out the three birds and spending a lot of time guiding me onto them. Well they really are LBBs!

What struck me was that the pale bird had pale legs and the other two had strikingly orange legs.

Today's work party Moors

Thanks to all 20 of the Tuesday crew.

We continued pollarding a section of the southern boundary willows. These trees were last pollards 5 years ago and will require attention for the rest of their lives every 5 years. This will extend their longevity and over time increase the biodiversity in and around them. If they are left unmanaged they will split and die.
The brash was burned.
We also started opening up the east side border tree/hedge line. Here the willows have shaded out the hawthorn and blackthorn thickets. We pollarded some of the large willows to let in the light which will hopefully save the scrub before it's too late. The brash was piled up close to the border fence where hopefully bramble will take hold and create more passerine habitat.

Thanks to Andy A. Alan D. Bob O. Bobby P. Bob R. Charles. Dave H. Graham L. Jim B. Kim W. Nick F. Paul M. Peter E. Ray C. Roger S. Sophie. Terry W. Tony B . Ian newbie and me.B :)john

Photo's
1. the southern border willows after last weeks work and before this weeks.
2. Close up of the pollarded willows. In time holes will form in the trunk providing nest holes for birds and insects.
3. the east side border where today we started pollarding willows to let in the light to benefit the smaller scrub bushes. The lowering of the height of the border trees will also lessen the surprise attacks from avian predators and nest robbing crows.

A work party organised by the Trust will be clearing the overgrown sections of the FLASHES path today..this shouldn't affect any birding today on that site.
