Who can tell me about these Bausch & Lomb? (1 Viewer)

Ruff

Two birds in one.
I'm looking at my first good set of bins, purchased around 1980. They are B&L roof prism 7 x 35s and were made in Japan. Bashed and battered, they are still a really good compact, lightweight binocular, and are my constant backs up in my vehicle. They've been in for repair twice now, both times 100% covered under the 25 year warranty they came with. When I purchased them, when I returned them for repair, and once at an optics fair I've asked what the model name was and was told that they were 'just' known as the B&L 7 x 35s. Back in the Pleistocene 1980s they cost me around $400 with tax I think, and aside from a few hunters back in the day, I've never seen anyone else carrying them.

Any information about these little gems that I haven't already stated will be gratefully received!

If you can stick in a picture, Ruff, you'll be more likely to get the ball rolling.
Your model probably predates the B&L Elite series (which included a 7x35) which I was reading about last Friday when an Elite 7x36 popped up for sale here :

BTW nice pool of info here about the Elite series from BFers :

A bird told me the "no cruelty to binoculars" society are on their annual group trip to Disney atm so you should be OK posting a picture...|:D|

These predate the Elite series by at least a decade. I was hoping that would be revealing. If this forum requires the use of photobucket to post photos, well I've started to sign up there a couple of times and found that my patience isn't up to the job- I think I must have tried a dictionary's worth of user names etc and they were all taken....

Birdforum does host photos. If you click on "Go Advanced" instead of "Quick Reply" there is an option there to "Manage Attachments" which allows you to upload pictures. The size limit is something like 800x800 pixels and 200kB.
Often some of the most interesting results from a Google search for images on binoculars lead back to BF :t:

If you read down through the 2nd (Bird Forum) link above I believe you will find out that these 7 x 36 Elites had Uppendahl Roof Prisms and that some of them had Phase Coatings too. They are rumored to have been very good.

Thread 60 therein mentions that the Bausch & Lomb 7x35 Classic has an Uppendahl prism cluster and thread 63 notes that some of these Classic II's were phase coated.

Bob, not sure if it was established in that thread what design changes happened between 7x35 and 7x36. Certainly the 7x36 specs indicate a nice FOV and eye relief. That retailer priced it at £175 which for UK prices would be a nice enough deal if it was phase coated (seems a phone call to determine if the serial number ended with a P might be enough to ascertain this).
Still I decided not to post on the UK deals thread deciding to let that RIP ;) Seems someone has their name on it now. Good luck to them B :)
