western France V. big finch ?? (1 Viewer)

we saw this this morning

seemed to be much bigger than a finch nearly as big as a thrush
but this is the only photo we got

In an old hedge (oak , maples...) in farmland

This is a regular Chaffinch, and this shows how size, in the field, is rarely reliable. This is one of the details I explain in my first bird identification lesson (in French) you might be interested to watch : https://youtu.be/CpKNe7BUQxw
 
Ditto to Chaffinch; it is in a Field Maple (Acer campestre) which has smaller leaves than many other maples - that would make the bird appear larger by comparison :t:
