Early morning update from JTB at the Flashes:

1 Little Ringed Plover, 29 Avocet, 2 Oystercatcher, 14 Lapwing, 10 Curlew, 7 Shelduck, 3 Gadwall, 23 Shoveler

Hopefully everyone will be out in the field this Bank Holiday but if not here is a little light reading in the form of the next historic annual report to be released as a PDF. This was the reserve's first "double year" report covering 1989 and 1990, written by John and Stuart Croft.

Highlights in the report include Blue-winged Teal, Ferruginous Duck, the first record of Brent Goose, single records of Buzzard each year(!), Oystercatcher on 3 dates over 2 years, a count of 119 Curlew, Red-necked Phalarope, breeding Turtle Dove, Long-eared Owl and breeding Willow Tit amongst other records.

It is interesting to reflect on the "Reserve Management" section at the rear of the report a quarter of a century on.
