3 juv Curlew Sand still at the Flashes this evening plus a juv Med Gull in the roost as per Dave J. Med Gull looks to be a more advanced individual than the one recorded earlier in the month.

Reeds at Flashes

After tonight's meeting we can announce that work to ultimately eradicate the unwanted sections of reeds around the 2nd Flash will begin in September. This will involve hand wiping the reed stems. This the start and also a section will be intensively grazed to see how that affects other areas. But at last the clock will be turned back so to speak:t:

This is fantastic news John (albeit long overdue which will now make the task more difficult). I am sure we will talk more on the All-Dayer but can you advise which sections will be treated first (and which end of September, although I am sure we will all put up with some disturbance to get this resolved)

The second group of Curlew Sandpiper which arrived on Saturday completed the fourth day of their stay yesterday. The species is not renown for long stays with many just being single days; the following occurrences are the most prolonged presences since 1984:

13 days - two at the Flashes from 25th September to 7th October 1985
12 days - two juveniles at the Flashes from 15th to 26th September 2007
9+ days - one at the Flashes from 30th August to at least 7th September 1988 *
8+ days - one juvenile at the Flashes from 14th September to at least 21st September 1996 #
8 days - one juvenile at the Flashes from the 7th to 14th September 2004
8 days - one juvenile at the Flashes from 7th to 14th September 1999
7 days - two at the Flashes from the 12th to 18th September 2002
7 days - one juvenile at the Flashes from the 7th to 13th September 2004
6 days - two at the Flashes from the 13th to 18th September 2002
6 days - one at the Flashes from 17th 22nd September 1999
5+ days - one at the Flashes from 3rd September to at least 7th September 1988 *
5 days - one juvenile at the Flashes from 17th to 21st September 2001 +

* There was a continued presence of varying numbers up to the 10th September at least but impossible to determine if these two individuals stayed for that entire duration.
# There was a continued presence of varying numbers up to the 3rd October but impossible to determine if this individuals stayed for that entire duration
+ Dates as per WMBC Annual Report; the Upton Warren report stated it was only present from the 18th to 20th September

However the record stay at the reserve is a mammoth 27 days for a bird present between the 2nd and 28th September 1970.

Make A Date with Nature (tomorrow!)

As flagged by John earlier in the week, conditions are again looking very conducive to wader and tern passage on Thursday; also a decent movement of Whinchat and Tree Pipit over the last few days.

Overnight rain will see winds turn around to the south-east with further rain from mid morning until early evening. Anything could happen but you need to be in it to win it!

I'm hoping to put in a long-ish stint (!) tomorrow
