Canon sx50 settings for record shots (1 Viewer)

Hi all. I just took delivery of an sx50. My intent is not to become a photographer, but to use the camera mainly for getting record shots to accompany submissions to bird record committees. So, not looking for "the perfect shot". Can anyone give me the quick one para guide to shooting sessions - exposure, focusing, etc.? I would be very grateful.
