I'm looking to buy a scope, eyepiece, case and tripod for under £500 - what would be the best manufacturer etc? I'd be using it around the Cotswold lakes area in Wilts/Glos.

I would look into vortex in that price range. Not sure if theyre available at your location or not but for the $, they are great.

I've got a Celestron Regal 65 F-ED that is great and received very good reviews on the net and here. Bright view, sharp to the edge, good wide angle zoom, virtually no CA and also takes 1.25" astro eyepieces. This I have on a Velbon 200 tripod, seems very stable.
The 65ED and the 80Ed are available at Sherwoods for £345 and £395 which are great prices. The tripod is about £70 from most retailers on the net.
Hope this helps.

Les.
