We've had three of these cute woodies in our neighborhood for a long time but they won't come to our deck feeders. Guess the numerous old oak trees keep them busy collecting acorns which they store and eat. This is a big crop but I couldn't resist showing them off.
Another from the archives. I'm currently going through the entire inventory and ruthlessly "binning" images dating "way" back: found this one.
Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus subsp. striatipectus) Male, species slightly sexually dimorphic. Photographed along a ridge north of San Gerardo de Dota, Cordillera Talamanca, San Jos Province, Costa Rica. Montane cloud forest at ca. 2,743 m (9,000 ft) elevation.
Hi Folks: Another from my archives. This Acorn Woodpecker was captured at Madera Kubo B&B, Madera Canyon, AZ.
The adult acorn woodpecker has a brownish-black head, back, wings and tail, white forehead, throat, belly and rump. The eyes are white. There is a small part on the small of their...
These woodies are constantly moving the acorns from one hole to another in order to find the perfect fit. That larger hole had a youngster in it earlier this year.
Hi Folks; WOW! The finds I'm making restoring my computer. Found this male Acorn Woodpecker I captured at Madera Kubo B&B, Madera Canyon, AZ. in 2008 amongst hundred's of others that I had never processed.
We took our dogs for a walk along the lakeshore yesterday and were surprised to find this pair of acorns feeding a youngster in a nest. We thought it was a little late for nestlings, but I just read that once the young leave the nest they return to be fed for several weeks.
Just a quick visit to the local library while Mom does some errands here. I'll browse and comment later.
Here's another one of the "woodlicker", giving me a different pose. And get a load'a those feet! They're almost as big as a moorhen's :eek!:
One more from yesterday's early morning walk along the bike path. This Acorn Woodpecker was part of a whole family a couple of trees further down the driveway to Vallejo's Home State Park. There was also an Am. Kestrel in that tree, but the peckers didn't seem to mind. At least, not until the...
Hi Folks; Captured this male Acorn Woodpecker at Madera Kubo B&B, Madera Canyon, AZ perched high on a Pine tree. Large crop, fill flash Assist.
The adult Acorn Woodpecker has a brownish-black head, back, wings and tail, white forehead, throat, belly and rump. The eyes are white. There is a...
Acorn woodies stuff acorns into holes and cracks in late summer, then pick them out again through the winter. If they've gone mouldy or insects have laid eggs in them in the meantime, then that just adds nutrition value. I watched this guy retrieve a couple of acorns, then take them to a branch...
