australian wood duck

  1. Duck/goose

    Duck/goose

Maned or wood!! What a confused bird this one is, with so many names. As we moved slowly along the length of Seppings Pond we came across this pair of Maned Ducks on the wide grass bank in front of the water. This is a monotypic species in a monotypic genus, so quite an unusual bird.
  2. Grazers

    Grazers

After our cruise, we found our hotel for the night and had another wonderful meal in their dining room. I was awake early and wandered down to the riverside to see what was about, spending a minute or two watching a small ferry plying back and fro across the river. Why is this always such a...
  3. Assorted

    Assorted

Over near the Pink-eared Ducks were a group of Maned Ducks and Hardheads, all equally dozy looking.
  4. Maned Duck (or Goose)

    Maned Duck (or Goose)

One of the alternative names for these is Maned Goose, and you can see from the bill how it got to be called that. I think it's now generally accepted to be a duck (but don't quote me on that LOL) Whatever, I think these are really attractive guys.
  5. Waddlers

    Waddlers

Shortly before sundown I did my usual circuit of the estate! Out at the front drive were these three Maned Duck, they rather seem to like hanging about in this area.
  6. Mum's watching

    Mum's watching

Another very early start the next day - we were off to the famous O'Reilly's!! En route we called in at their Vineyard, for a cuppie and a break before tackling the steep and narrow, hairpin road up to the Rainforest reserve. The Alpaca Farm has now been re-located there apparently. We heard...
  7. Those cockies...

    Those cockies...

.... get everywhere!! There was me, out in the dying light of the day, spotted some Maned Ducks by the front drive and two Sulphur-crested Cockatoos wanted in on the pic too!
  8. Polyonymous

    Polyonymous

This was confusing to me, as the Maned Duck has a couple of other names, both used locally in Australia... (Australian) Wood Duck, but nothing like the Wood Duck found in the North America and also Maned Goose. It is rather goose-like, isn't it, with that short bill. Anyway.... Hans wanted to...
  9. Having a stroll

    Having a stroll

Also in the cemetery area was a Maned Duck... probably some more hiding in shadows but this was the only one I saw.
  10. Maned Duck

    Maned Duck

This is an adult male. Our field guides called this bird the "Australian Wood Duck" but Clements and most other authorities use "Maned Duck." Males have a narrow black "mane" down the middle of their nape. Seeing these birds grazing reminded me of small geese. In...
  11. The one with many names

    The one with many names

Confusingly this duck is also known as Wood Duck, but there's an American one, so this then has to have 'Australian' added to the name. In addition it's been called Maned Goose (I think due to it's rather small bill). Anyway, there were a few loafing on the bank of the lake, and yet more...

  24. Setting up house

    Setting up house

Australian Wood Ducks That's the female duck, chatting away to what appears to be a bundle of feathers, but is in fact her mate. The hollow in the tree trunk just behind her legs is their chosen nesting site...these ducks always nest in trees. Once all the ducklings are hatched, the parents...
  25. Mother and chick

    Mother and chick

Australian Wood Duck (female and juvenile) Peaceful, alert, and not at all shy. Surprising, since this city Duck and her partner originally brought ten newly hatched ducklings to the river. These Ducks nest in tree hollows, many feet above the ground, and the babies leap from the tree on their...
