Northern Mockingbird in my backyard on a cloudy day.
  3. Gatheredeagle

Thrush ID- Marina del Rey, CA, USA

Can someone just confirm my suspected ID. I don’t want to write what I think it is so there won’t be a bias. One of them is out of focus but shows the eyering.
  4. Barn Owl

    Barn Owl

I had to come back a second day to get an acceptable photo of this perching male. The first day I found it, sleeping in a recessed area of a tall palm, it had its back to the outside and all I could see was a splash of brown feathers in the drabber surroundings of the palm fronds.
  5. Little Blue Heron

    Little Blue Heron

This beautiful bird was feeding for quite a long time while I was nearby but I could never get an angle where I had a more photogenic backdrop.
  6. Yellow-rumped Warbler

    Yellow-rumped Warbler

I only had a moment before he/she flew away.
  7. White-crowned Sparrow (I think)

    White-crowned Sparrow (I think)

I had trouble deciding which species this bird was with upside down feeded pose. I was leaning toward Chipping sparrow but some one more knowledgeable than I thinks White-crowned. In any event, it cared a lot more about getting nectar than about my proximity.
  8. Western Meadowlark

    Western Meadowlark

These birds are profuse in the reserve but often too far away for a good photo. To paraphrase an old movie, "The hills are alive with the sound of meadowlarks".
  9. Coyote on the hunt

    Coyote on the hunt

I watched this young coyote stalk and finally capture one of the myriad of prairie dogs that live in this reserve.
  10. Western Coastal Scrub Jay

    Western Coastal Scrub Jay

Just one of many avian visitor's to these backdeck feeders.
  11. Night Bird Droppings?

    Night Bird Droppings?

We moved into our home last July. I noticed this white chalky substance under our Elm tree about 2 weeks ago. It seems there is more almost each day and they only appear after each night. Any idea what this is? I know we have hawks, finches, woodpeckers and scrubjays that love the tree...
  12. Great Horned Owl

    Great Horned Owl

Landscape photog trying some avian photography for the first time. We were hoping this guy would be around for my first venture in photographing birds with my new 100-400 f4.5-5.6L lens. Fortunately it was patient enough with me to get moderately close to him. I think this is approximately a...
  13. Salinas River Wildlife Refuge

    Salinas River Wildlife Refuge

There are only two directions at the refuge: 1. You head toward the beach 2. You head toward the river I haven't explored the river trail yet, because the beach is incredible. It is home to many shore birds, especially the Snowy Plover. The picture is of the marshy habitat just before a...
