An assortment of black and whites

Australian Ibis, Great Crested Tern and others, not so easily picked out; but there's a White-faced Heron, Caspian Tern and a little Silver Gull. There's other things out there, brownish... merging into the mud and seaweed and I've not a scoobie about them!!
  2. Cresties

Daddy bird, Mummy bird and Baby bird

Sorry, just couldn't resist that title, just reminded me of the Goldilocks story LOL. Just beyond the Welcome Swallows was this group consisting of Australian Pelican, Great Cormorant, Silver Gull, Caspian Tern and Great Crested Tern.

    Hunting

It's always nice to return to a site a few days later and be able to pick up different species. Hot on the heels of the kingfisher, I spotted a Great Crested Tern hunting over the water. I love terns. Had my booster vaccines this morning!
  7. Unexpected

    Unexpected

Further along the beach we came across a group of Great Crested Terns, my first sighting of these large terns. I quite over-looked the fact that there was a Gull-billed tern in amongst them until I downloaded the pictures!! I really didn't think terns could be so big LOL SF
  8. Great but smaller

    Great but smaller

... well smaller than Caspian that is! It's nearly 10cm smaller. So this was the other main tern species found in harbour here.
  9. Waders and friends on the beach

Waders and friends on the beach

After admiring the Pipit, June and I went and sat in the hide for a bit. As the birds were a bit distant I took a more general picture of a largish group out on a sandbar. Mainly I can pick out Australian Ibis, Great Crested Tern, Silver Gull, White-faced Heron. I also recorded Grey Plover...
  10. More waiting passengers

    More waiting passengers

Further along that pontoon were some Great Crested Terns. Guess they were waiting for the next boat too!
  11. A crestie

    A crestie

.... but a darn sight bigger than the 'crestie' we know and love in Scotland LOL Another tern hanging out on the beach were some Great Crested Terns. Nice looking guys aren't they.
  12. Hunting

    Hunting

Some places, like Oxenford Weir, you just have to have your eyes looking in all directions and at all levels! For no sooner had I taken the picture of the cormorant at water level than I spotted a Great Crested Tern hovering up in the air trying to spot a fish! I was pretty pleased with this...
  13. Cresties

    Cresties

.... but these are a darn sight bigger than what we call 'cresties' over here LOL. These are Great Crested Terns and are rather large. Nice birds these and another Lifer of course!

  17. The Gift of Love

    The Gift of Love

The bird in the left (supposedly male) offered a small fish to the bird in the right (supposedly female). The female gladly accepted. Birds too have their rituals in establishing their relationship. Happy Valentine's Day!!!
