  1. Farewell Skipness

    Farewell Skipness

The last image from that day round Knapdale and the Mull of Kintyre, with the ferry from Skipness to Lochranza on Arran. Hope you enjoyed that tour, it's certainly a very beautiful area of Scotland to visit.
  2. Grey and white in the brown

Grey and white in the brown

At least they show up.... waders would be very difficult to spot and I can't see any. As many of you know, I don't 'do' gulls, but think there's three species here; Common Gull bottom far left, Lesser Black-backed Gull top far right with the rest mostly Herring Gulls I think. I was sorry there...
  3. Tide's out

    Tide's out

This is the beach at Skipness, quite good for birds with the rocks and fresh water running through
  4. Burl

    Burl

That's what the forum has told me this big lump on the Wych Elm is. The tree was growing beside the road leading to the castle and found it so fascinating I thought I'd get a picture in order to get it identified. It seems they can have a few causes, perhaps an injury or a virus, but don't...
  5. Still a home for some

    Still a home for some

Just where I took my last picture, this Chaffinch was feeding, then flying back to a hole in the wall and back again, several times while I was there. I didn't investigate, but presumed there was a nest there. It was a bit high for me to have looked into anyway.
  6. TTTW.... no glass though!

    TTTW.... no glass though!

Another view of Arran - it does rather dominate the scenery around here. I had a lovely wander round the castle, while Pauline stayed in the car. She wasn't feeling too well, so thought it best to sit in the shade. It was a bit too hot to go climbing up to the parapet, so I just stayed on the...
  7. View from the Pass

    View from the Pass

So we left Tarbert after refreshments and headed south down the Mull of Kintyre for a few miles, before turning left to go up and over the hill to Skipness. Who can resist stopping when you get such a vista as this laid out in front of you. This is the southern part of the Isle of Arran. Just...
  8. Reflections

    Reflections

Eventually we worked our way round to Tarbert, a rather lovely harbour on Loch Fyne. A mooch around the town and a cup of tea before we set off for a visit to Skipness. Tarbert is an old Norse (I think) name. And apparently it means a place where boats could be dragged across to a neighbouring...
  9. Sound of Jura

    Sound of Jura

After our lunch I went out onto the verandah and took this picture of the view ..... not bad for a caravan site eh. This it must be the islands in front of the lower end of Jura, can't see anything else that fits the angle.
  10. Lunch time

    Lunch time

.... we'd been looking for ages for somewhere to have a cup of coffee, but there was nothing at all. However, the map showed a hotel at Kilberry, so pulled into the car park. Only to find it was closed.... only open at weekends! Time for a re-think, spotted this Swallow sitting on the wire, so...
  11. ... Title please

    ... Title please

Sorry, I had so many title ideas running through my mind for this one, I gave up LOL. A drink for the best offering. The picture just made me laugh when I opened up the thumb nail on my screen, couldn't resist showing it to you as well.
  12. Another white in the blue

    Another white in the blue

No wonder we get confused by the seals (well me anyway)! This one is also a Common Seal and looks so different to the one I showed you yesterday. I'm surprised he's still lying there, the rock has all but disappeared, hasn't it.
  13. Yellow and green

    Yellow and green

For some reason I looked down at my feet and saw this pretty Primrose growing in the verge.... just waiting to have a picture taken. Such a lovely reminder that it was still spring, even though the weather was rather warm for that LOL. This was the very beginning of the long hot summer.
  14. White in the blue

    White in the blue

Another species knocking about at this spot was a Herring Gull. He'd been foraging on the rocks too, then decided to go for a swim.... well the water did look very inviting on this lovely warm day.
  15. Not 'peace' but 'noise'

    Not 'peace' but 'noise'

Sorry.... this is the Sound of Jura. We'd reached the bottom of Loch Caolisport where it opens up to the water between the mainland and Jura... called a 'sound' here. Part of the Atlantic Ocean of course. The mountains you should recognise, if you've been paying attention, are the Paps of Jura.
  16. Nearly submerged

    Nearly submerged

Also at this spot were Common Seals and it looks like this guy's roost is about to disappear under the water LOL. I had to check the ID of them with the Forum experts, as I can never work out which is which of our different species.
  17. Foraging

    Foraging

So time to move on, so set off again, but didn't get very far - just the other side of the harbour, when we stopped again. There on the rocks was an Oystercatcher feeding away... never did get a better look at him than this though. Quite a good stop this one.
  18. Taken off

    Taken off

Obviously the Buzzard got miffed that we turned our attention from him to the view and took to the air. We did manage to find him though.... a distant fleck against the pure white cloud!
  19. Harbour...

    Harbour...

.... lights? I'm not sure, it was broad daylight. Where we stopped for the Buzzard was this lovely view of the harbour at Ormsary. There seems to be a bit of industry going on there but I'm not sure what they do. Fishing related maybe. It looked so attractive with that lovely white sand bar...
  20. Tree Sitter

    Tree Sitter

Just a little bit along the road, we stopped to investigate a lump in a tree. It wasn't very close, so pictures not that great, but it was clearly a Buzzard. Our first raptor of the trip.
  21. ... And another mountain view

    ... And another mountain view

This time on Islay.... but if you think I'm going to try and spell out the various options as to which it might be, you can think again!!! Islay and Jura are the two main most southerly of the Inner Hebrides group of islands.
  22. Mountains

    Mountains

We stopped again further down the loch to study this view - the Paps of Jura showing above the hills of Knapdale, on the other side of the loch. I was already beginning to think I'd made a great choice of trip for the day.
  23. Peace

    Peace

The lovely bay where Columba would have landed. The wee island is..... well just about unpronouncable LOL..... hard enough to spell it, which I've done on the picture. It really was worth the half hour stop - you could be there even longer, as there was a path taking you up into the hills...
  24. St Columba's Cave

    St Columba's Cave

This was the object of our detour, a cave where the monk Columba reputedly used as a shelter when he traveled from Ireland to Iona. This was a time of Viking raids, and the cave was well hidden. You can read more about it here: https://www.britainexpress.com/attractions.htm?attraction=4778...
  25. Fairies

    Fairies

We didn't see too many birds that day, or at least ones to photograph. So a few 'other wildlife' and views to follow. We turned briefly, off the main Knapdale road to visit St Columba's Cave near Ellary on the side of Loch Caolisport. On a derelict building I found this pretty flower growing...
