    Just flew in from Mexico

Black-headed Grossbeak — Return migration from Mexico, March 26th. Today, the 27th, I see several of these males around the feeders. This one looks like his adult plumage is still coming in. This may be his first spring. The females should be here in a week or two.

    Black-headed Grosbeak

It takes two years before adult males get their full orange and black plumage. Often heard singing loudly from within the canopy of tall trees, they can be frustratingly difficult to see. This male represents the nominate Rocky Mountain race, in which the male lacks the orange stripes on the...

    Black-headed Grosbeak — Handsome Male

This is one of two posts today, a male and female Black-headed Grosbeak. These Grosbeaks are a dominate presence at my feeder station. They love the black sunflower seeds and the seed stacker cake. Now and then they will bathe in the nearby water. It’s early in the season so I think they are all...

    Black-headed Grosbeak

Took this picture yesterday in San Pedro Valley Park where we do a weekly bird survey. It takes two years before adult males get their full orange and black plumage. Often heard singing loudly from within the canopy of tall trees, they can be frustratingly difficult to see. In our area, males...

    Black-Headed Grosbeak

Taken during a soft rain. I much prefer cloudy days for imaging birds, there aren't the hard shadows that, in my opinion, detract from the bird, as well as the benefit of saturating colors. This migrant species is on of my favorites. It confirms that winter is over, spring has begun and summer...
