Another view of the Red Wattlebird. Frequently seen all round the Adelaide Hills and particularly in residential areas.
  8. Raucous chap!

    Raucous chap!

One of the largest wattlebirds in Australia, the Red Wattlebird has a distinctive and raucous call, heard from a great distance. This is yet another of my newbies from my trip down south. Although my book states this one may be a local at the Gold Coast, I've not seen it here.

Caught, banded and released. This is one of the most painful birds one can handle. It has claws like hypodermic needles and is expert at inserting them into the banders hands with resultant blood flow.

    Red Wattlebird Feeding

The same bird as my earlier post, now feeding. For the benefit of those who don't know this species, their voice (it can't be described as a song) is a loud, raucous cackle.

    Red Wattlebird

Although busy feeding on these flowers he took a moment to ensure that I was no threat

    'What are you doing?....'

Hi everyone, Pete and I went to Moonee Ponds near the City for a change and I was very happy to get this photo as I very rarely get anything decent and I thought that this wasn't too bad, so wanted to share! I have the Red Wattlebirds in abundance at home but they never stay still long enough...
  23. Liquid lunch!

    Liquid lunch!

Took this pix this afternoon while it was feeding. Minutes later it started to rain so I beat a hasty and wet retreat.

    Red Wattlebird (Juvenile)

I have posted a couple of adults recently so though I would share this one. Afer following some cockatoos around for a while I was heading back to the car and came across an adult and juvenile. The adult left but junior waited until I managed shot. Very obliging I thought.
