  1. Escaped

    Escaped

Back in August, a cousin and her husband visited Scotland and we arranged to meet up at Loch Leven RSPB reserve, as it was about half-way between us. It was good to catch up with them after many years. This reserve used to be called Vane Farm. We had lunch there then a wander round the reserve...
  2. Prickly job

    Prickly job

With the help of Aeshna and Ficedula in the insect forum, this poor bumblebee image has been identified as one of two species, most likely Field Cuckoo-bee (Bombus campestris but the other option was Bombus pascuorum. The this is a Spear Thistle Cirsium vulgare, which does look rather like a...
  3. You shall not pass!

    You shall not pass!

.... well perhaps we'll let you if you promise to be good. On the way to a woodland and hill walk (which we didn't do with the baby). Actually I was hoping to go to the feeding station, but couldn't find it! Due to the construction works they'd moved it, but there were no signs. We didn't find...
  4. White and Pink

    White and Pink

Along the same stretch of path I chased a butterfly around for a bit until he finally settled on this Rosebay Willowherb.... gotcha!! Oh I do have problems trying to get butterflies in shot.
  5. Caught (k)napping

    Caught (k)napping

We left the first hide and wandered along the path the the next one. There's a steep bank (protecting the birds from disturbance) and covered in a variety of grasses and wild flowers. This was one of them; Common Knapweed.
  6. Grey? in the green

    Grey? in the green

Greylags don't look particularly 'grey' do they? Actually it was such a surprise to realise there were two geese in this picture. The first two in the series, the one on the left had it's head turned away, and only in the last two did it turn to look at her mate! She blended in so well in the...
  7. Hill view

    Hill view

Out of a side window of the hide, I got this view through the middle distance trees to the Lomond Hills beyond. Not sure, but think the village on of the Balgedies (East or West). This part of the hills is West Lomond at 522m. The area is used by the local gliding school as they get plenty of...
  8. Puddlers

    Puddlers

Found a Lapwing resting beside one of the pools near the hide, along with a passing Moorhen. Another fully zoomed and well-cropped image due to the distance!
  9. Family time

    Family time

A full zoomed and heavily cropped picture this one, so you can tell it's quite a distance from the hide. However, I did want to record the family of Mute Swans out for a swim.
  10. White in the blue and green

White in the blue and green

We wandered down to the nearest hide overlooking the loch, though actually it's set some distance back and looks more over the grassland, pools and scrapes before the water. There's some construction work going on to provide an 'accesible' underpass to the hides. Anyway, I managed to get this...
  11. Priory island

    Priory island

Just poking it's nose into this picture is the peninsula for St Serf's Island. You can read more about the history of this place (dating back to 800 and something) then becoming an Augustine Priory. https://canmore.org.uk/site/27872/loch-leven-st-serfs-island-st-serfs-priory-church Virtually...
  12. Loch and hills with signs

    Loch and hills with signs

This is the view from the car park across Loch Leven. I'd arranged to meet up with my niece, her husband and their baby son Joseph, my first sighting of the wee mite (he's a year old this week)! I had a wander about the car park and road while waiting for them and was rather struck with this...
  13. Heres looking at you kid

    Heres looking at you kid

I visited Vane Farm near Kinross this morning a 11am and caught this lovely closeup of the Lapwing
  14. Lapwing

    Lapwing

Arrived at Vane farm, Kinross at 7 am after an hour and 10 minutes drive. I entered hide 1 to find only 1 tufted duck sitting in the water. This was taken from hide 3 the Gillian Hide, If I remember correctly.
  15. Little Ringed Plover

    Little Ringed Plover

Thanks for your comments this week. Have a good Bank Holiday week-end! PS - no response as yet from the local authority about the Tawny Owl!
  16. Another view from the top of the hill

Another view from the top of the hill

AAP This picture is looking down onto the wetland area of Vane Farm reserve, if you get out your binos you might see the hides;) In the distance you can see the Ochil Hills.
  17. I can't get rid of that itch

I can't get rid of that itch

AAP There were lots of Mute Swans at Vane Farm, in fact there was one on a nest right beside the path on the way into a hide. Digiscoped
  18. I got to the top...

    I got to the top...

... in the days when I still could! This was actually the first time I'd climbed up to the top of the hill at Vane Farm and oh how well worth-while it was. This is Loch Leven and the island you can see is St Serf's Island which has the remains of an Augustinian Priory. AAP
  19. Dozy Oystercatcher

    Dozy Oystercatcher

AAP Another from that trip to Vane Farm. I can't believe it's nearly 6 years ago! I thought this one was asleep until I saw his eye open when I looked at the pictures later! Digiscoped
  20. And shake it all about

    And shake it all about

AAP I had a very lovely visit to Vane Farm with two keen young birders back in the summer of 2006. From one of the hides we spotted this Black-headed Gull on the far side of the loch. It was having a bit of a preen. Digiscoped
  21. Pink-footed Geese

    Pink-footed Geese

AAP Back in 2005 I paid an autumn visit to Vane Farm to see the geese. Hundreds of pinkies had arrived - this picture shows just a few of them. Somewhere, in amongst, was a Barnacle Goose. Digiscoped through the heat haze.
