12x42 NL instead of 10x42 NL for birding ? (1 Viewer)

"Answering my own question here, but the short answer is that I much prefer NL12x42. I was worried they were hard to hold, but no harder than 10x42. The weird thing was that when I locked a bird with 10x42, it wasn't as dramatic as my previous 10x42 SV because the FOV was bigger. I already have the field of view I was used to with the 10x42 SV, but now I have a larger bird with easier to see details in all their glory. I have always loved being able to fill the FOV by seeing the bird in all its splendor and for me NL12x42 are a revelation. I would recommend trying them out when considering 10x42
How do you find the colors, the contrast and everything ... with a 12x42 NL that has a 3.5 mm output beam?"

"I was also thinking of going for 10x like my primary bins, but after trying NL Pure and the very logical FRP attachment, I tried 12x and decided to place an order last year. I just got it last weekend, and it works pretty well for me.

I would say that FRP is not a game-changing game, but after adding the ergonomics and weight of 1 (with a suitable armband and belts), I would agree with jcn that it is as stable as the 8.5 EL, which serves me well enough so far. The only thing I really don't like is the price, but that's a whole other story, as the OP never mentions the budget. After a while you have 12x42 NL. How do you find FRP at 12x42 ... does it make viewing more stable at 12x? Thank you."

FWIW, my new Celestron Granite ED 7x33's may have a small exit pupil but, for normal daytime viewing, they are working really well for me.

I'm not giving up my 8x56 Steier's but, these small compact Celestron bins are impressing me so far. They are super handy and easy to hold with a great field of view and great detail with the goose I looked at yesterday. I'm still in the "honeymoon phase" and tweaking the optics to work with my eyesight issues but, the value for performance is really high with these particular bins.

I should also note, I didn't get these for coastal bird watching or ship spotting so, they probably are not a good choice for the needs of users in this thread. On the flip side, I'm know considering the same bins in 9x33 format at $320USD delivered! ;)

[#26, bockos to jcnguyen09] "Very nice! I have an honest question: How long can you keep 12x42NL stable as 8x42 Sf? All day or hour or minutes? Thank you for your help and answers."

Hello together,

that 12x50 SV is in fact a bit tricky with eyeglasses, the eye distance must be set quite correctly and despite the narrow frame it only works with pressure. Not necessarily binoculars that I would recommend eyeglasses user without restriction.

I'm mulling over my next optics purchase. I'm debating 10x42 v. 12x42 NLs. I notice that the specs show the AFOV for the 12s quite a bit higher than the angle of view AND almost identical to the 10s. If you have used both - do you find the view with the 12s a lot narrower than with the 10s? I tend to think 12x is the way to go since I own 8x and this next purchase is intended to get me closer. Big FOV maybe not as important anyway. But, I'm honestly in a bit of a quandary about it.

Also, I own a NL 8x42 which is my go to eastern daily bino. So this next purchase will be used less, mostly on the shore and big lakes etc. I may even put them on a tripod on occasion. I know 12x is not a substitute for a scope. But, I am not inclined to jump into a scope just yet. Been there, done that. Maybe down the road. This next purchase is intended as a supplement to my 8x - to get me a bit closer in certain situations, not as my all around birding glass.

I have been asking myself the same question as the OP. Will the wider field of view allow the 12x42 to be as comfortable as my current 8x42 for birding. Only testing will tell.

I am also asking myself the same question. If anyone already owns both the 8x and 12x42 Nl, perhaps they can comment on how they differ in ease of use, and how much they use each of them. I was very surprised to learn that 12xNL has outsold the 8 x NL by a large margin, and wondered what I might be missing by owning the 8 x 42NL alone.
