Hello to you all!

I have recently been searching for my first serious pair of binoculars and during my searches 'birdforum' came up very regularly and I am most grateful to all the members that have posted the plethora of information I have read here. I love nature in general, including birds but by no means a specialist. I am anticipating buying a pair of Leica Trinovids very soon. They are one of the older models, the 8x20 BCA. I really want as compact as possible with the greatest return on optical quality for size. Apart from the Ultravids, which I cannot really justify/afford, the Trinovids seem to meet those criteria. Once again, a big thank yopu to the community here for all the wonderful reading I have benefitted from with regards to your work.

Welcome to Birdforum. It’s great that you have found the forum so helpful. 😊

Welcome compatriot !
If you want a really really really light bino with a really really light price but a decent optic, the old Nikon travelite iii 7x20 can be regularly found for 30 to 40€.
Less than 200g, usable whiteout glasses and apart from poor glare management, I think there was really good.

Hi! Thanks for contributing to the thread and you're nugget of information. I may have to disappoint you slightly because although I have French nationality ( et je parle français sans trop de problèmes) I am in fact British. I came to France in 1991 and have lived here ever since. So, I have in fact spent more of my life in France that in the UK! Thanks for the pointer to the Nikons. I've just had a look on the Net to see what the Nikon Travellers are like and I may try to get a pair to keep in the car but they look a bit big to keep in a jacket pocket. The 'pocket' criteria is really important to me. If they don't go in my pocket, I know, in the long run, they will not be on me when I want them.

Hi Jules and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

I can't blame you, i came to France in 1991 too...ok from nowhere but it doesn't count ^^
For the traveller III (not new ex version, certainly optically better but heavier), I put two pics here, one in my hand (pretty small, gloves 9) and with the sportstar ex. Really small too I think.

Hello and a warm welcome to the Bird Forum enjoy your visits.
Thanks! I've actually got the 8x20 Trinovids I anticipated buying and I couldn't be more pleased! What an incredible image they return. I don't need to include 'for such small binoculars' what you see in the lenses is incredible. Amazingly sharp and bright, the clarity allows me to notice all sorts of details that I had never been able to distinguish before buying them. I suppose the only trade offs are the slightly restrained field of view and getting the lenses correctly positioned for correct viewing. However, they are much easier than the other binoculars I tried in this range. Brilliant piece of kit!!
