Autumnwatch 2011 on BBC2 20.30pm-22.00pm 7/10/2011 (1 Viewer)

I really wasnt impressed with this first programme at all. The writers need to do some serious work to improve the series before the next episode goes live. Very dissapointed. Ger.

Some fantastic ideas for programmes there JTweedie :t: I actually felt quite excited reading your ideas and thinking yes, yes, oooh definitely!!!! Just need to get one of the BBC bigwigs to let the programmes be made :smoke:
We have so much EXCITING wildlife in the British Isles right on our doorsteps and we need to get folk interested!!! Ray Mears is doing a new series on UK wildlife, starting next Friday at 8pm on ITV1 - first programme is about the central Highlands & Caledonian forest :t:

A programme about a year in the life of various naturalists WOULD be a great idea too - the recent one about the guy who reared the wild turkeys in USA was fantastic.....as soon as it finished I was straight on the internet to seek out his book and get a copy sent over from America! :king:

Fingers crossed next Friday is an improvement.....Michaela might not be as hyper (calm down dear ;) ) and Chris....oh dear....he used to be such a serious naturalist but he's in danger of becoming a joke :C Martin was ok....I'm not one of those women who drool over him: he just didn't bug me as much as the other two :-O

Thanks Gill - although I'm often wondering: if a similar programme has been made, why reinvent the wheel? Only if they can bring something new should they go over old ground. I've been watching Life on Earth recently, and while the photography has dated really badly, in terms of scope, breadth and depth of content, it's hard to think of anything else that comes close.

I'll keep an eye out for Ray Mears' programme, he's always worth watching (and he comes across as much more genuine than Bear Grylls!).

I'd certainly feel safer out in the wilderness with Ray Mears than Bear Grylls.....no jumping out of planes for one!!! :eek!:

Tho' it has to be said Mr Grylls DOES get his kit off a bit more than Mr Mears ;)

Perhaps THAT is the reason Neil cancelled our Sky :smoke:

Glad it's not just me who feels it was a bit, well, stupid and childish :smoke: The osprey bit was the ONLY decent bit of the programme! The whole hour seemed to fly over without any substance too...as did the Uncut section afterwards :C

Hopefully things WILL improve as it would be a shame for this programme to be relegated to the mental drawer I keep for brain-dead programmes like Big Brother, any soaps etc etc :-C

 Totally agree! The rest of the programmes will have to be recorded, so that we can just watch the good bits. The cameramen are the best part of it, sack the producer and presenters - just give us the films!

I was not impressed with the first episode at all. Within 60 minutes how many minutes of wildlife footage did we get? The presenters seem to be more at home giving digs to one another.

I have no issue with MHG but what is he doing there when they have had better options like Gordon Buchanan and so much more? I know Simon King used to present and Gordon Buchnanan has gone AWOL. What was the point of him crying over his ruined slippers? He is very wet. Probably not as wet as Chris though who seems obsessed by cafes and cakes.

Michaela did a decent job but nothing that Kate could not do. Did we really have to see Michaela in a Humming bird outfit?

Why was nt there more Osprey footage? Why not more footage of the Hornets nest and the Lesser Horse Shoe Bat? Do we really need to see the presenters watching the wildlife when they could just show us the wildlife instead?

I can understand that they cant be too serious and it is more about getting your average joe public interested in nature but surely they can do it in a less than reality tv show style format?

Do we get updates on the Cuckoos and the Nightingales? Any discussion on how the very warm spring and coldest summer since 1993 affected wildlife? They briefly touch upon it but then talk about their own gardens.

The presntation was a shambles and I have admit that the programme missed the professional TV presentation skills and discipline of Kate Humble. Martin HG needs more control especially on "unsprung".
I still admire Chris Packham's expertise on a whole range of topics. I am still looking forward to the rest of the series. Just hope the presentation improves.

I must have been in the right mood for it as I found the programmes great fun and preferred the more ramshackle presentation to the very scripted feel of previous years. Nothing against her but I'm not really a fan of Kate Humble's presenting style - she kept things on-track but it always seems rather stilted.

I thought it was funny when Martin ruined his new slippers (sorry Martin). :-O

edit: oh and the osprey footage, especially the close-ups of the young, were superb - gorgeous!

This shall be prime time viewing in my house on Friday,Instead of Autumnwatch. re ;Mr Tweedie,I think your suggestions are spot on. :t:

Autumnwatch were due to film at Spurn Point today but due to a total lack of birds relocated to Tophill Low NR to do the gull roost. Wasn't a big roost due to calm weather and the probable Bonaparte's Gull seen this morning didn't materialize. No guarantee the footage will be shown.

This may have been the case on this day but Michaela was able to add Red-throated pipit to her list whilst with myself and Jono.

In the Saturday magazine it say's the doors could be open for Michaela to join Springwatch 2012. I do hope there will be something about Waxwings my favourite winter bird in this series.

anything that gets more wildlife on tv is good in my opinion, and lets face it you would find faults with anyone who became a presenter, at least they are passionte about wildlife and chris has to be admired for his depth of knowledge on such a wide range of subjects. looks ok so far to me tonight!

Yes, they definitely seemed to be a lot calmer this week. Perhaps they do take notice of some of the criticism. I thought it was a very good programme with some interesting features. I loved the slow-motion Salmon footage and was interested in the Spurn Head feature and the update on the Ospreys.

I thought the rock pool woman was very good on Unsprung and seemed to have an excellent knowledge of her subject. On the other hand Michaela seemed to be a little lost for much of the time and and didn't have a lot to do apart from continuity linking.

They spent 3 days at Spurn and gave us what in return? If they are going to use licence fees then they should do so properly. The Spurn coverage was a disaster.

Perfect replacement for Kate then. ;)

I've been reading ahead about next weeks program. Can you guess what Jonny K will be covering.... yep a Red Deer Rut, oh joy!!! 8-P
I don't think even Jonny K can show us anything the last umpteen series haven't already done so on that subject.

I agree with the comments above. A much better show and the presenting flowed, along with the features. Michaela was back on form and I really enjoyed the Spurn feature. I hadn't seen a bird trap like that before and it wad accompanied by good footage and informative commentary. Yes, I would have liked more from Spurn but they have to appeal to everyone.

Quick question - on the last episode they played the sound of Redwings, but I honestly couldn't hear anything - they played it twice and each time nothing! Was that just me?

It's not the first time on this or Springwatch when they've played a sound and I've not been able to hear it. I'm 35 and have good hearing, and I can hear all the other sounds in their films, or even in the background when they're presenting to the camera.

I hope I'm really not losing any of my hearing, it would be interesting if anyone can say if they definitely heard the sound very clearly, because otherwise it's not a pleasant thought to think part of my hearing is getting lost.
