Autumnwatch 2011 on BBC2 20.30pm-22.00pm 7/10/2011 (4 Viewers)

I watched a bit of Unsprung for the first time - Top Gear with critters. A couple of observations, what was the point of measuring the Nightingale recording on speakers with a sound meter? Answers on a plankton please.

Iolo, get out mate while the going's good!

Some fine photo's though sent in.

Talking of photo's was that a Red-breasted Fly labelled as a Spotted on the rig?

Glad someone else spotted that..... looked in the brief view I got that it was a good photo too in the montage of labeled shots taken on the rig.

Also it was a brilliant shot of the Wilson's Snipe by Martin Goodey that was held up rather than as was announced, a Snipe.

Lenny (on the rig) knows his birds and he would not have made that error so I suspect it is down to the Beeb.

The brief view of the bird labelled Spotted Flycatcher made me sit up and I was confident that it wasn't one and that in the few moments that I saw it, I was reasonably sure that it was a RB Flycatcher and have been debating it with some local birders today. Concensus was RB Fly. Glad that there are more confirmations of it. I suspect that it was a BBC labelling error. They made a monumental cock up of labelling last week with the Bewick's Swan bill patterns.

Shame that these basic error are still happening-I never blame the presenters as I dont expect them to recognise birds!

Was Iolo on Unsprung - as he knows his stuff. Wish he was on more and by himself!

Have to say, the content of the last 2 programmes has been of interest, but the presenters prove their lack of knowledge when live, & unsprung is just a waste of time to be honest.
The Autumn programme could quite easily be pre-recorded as its pitch black outside & you're not going to see much live...apart from sleeping Badgers.

Agree that the presenters can't know everything but these mistakes ought not to occur, the facts should be checked by the people who do know. Iolo did a tiny bit on Unsprung but not much. Thought he was so enthusiastic about the Fin Whales and other cetaceans. These whales are very impressive as I was lucky enough to witness in the old days of the Pride of Bilbao ship in Biscay and we nearly ran one over. Shudder to think of the damage to ship and animal had a collision occurred.

Agree. Couldn't see the point of standing out under an umbrella in the dark and rain when there was the settee about 50m away. And what was the point of bringing in a fat tame fox when they had just run a film of foxes in the wild. Could be better. Shame as there are some good bits on the programme as a whole.

On Unsprung Iolo was encouraged to mouth the word 'puffling' seductively to the camera, at the request of a viewer. To be honest, he didn't seem to need too much encouragement and hammed it up by licking his lips and milking the moment. It is good to see the show's producers working their 'magic' on him.;)

That was to show that speakers provide a range of sound loudness which is what they are supposed to do but it didn't show that cos the sound meter didn't work. lol.

Content is good. Iolo is brilliant. It would be nice if the producers did not to dumb down the show. It appears as if they want to make it a programme with silly jokes and odd bit of wildlife in between. I am sure most viewers, eve those with the slightest interest do not expect that z-list desperate attention seeking celebrity behaviour.

I quite enjoyed tonight's episode - did I just say that? I wonder if some of our gripes may have found their way to the producers? I'm not BlOddie's greatest fan but it was good to see him back. Even Martin Fluffer-Inconsequence seemed interesting (it must be the brandy?) I wish Roy Dennis would do a series, or am I being too birdocentric?

I switched over after 1 minute of unsprung

I thought the programme was ok tonight. I didn't see any mistakes but I only notice the really obvious ones so there may have been some. I guess others will have picked up on them if they occured.

Unsprung was a bit bland but ok.

Watched Autumn Watch last night.
What complete and utter drivel.
Why dig Bill Oddie up? That man has clearly lost the plot!!!!!
Watching the film of the Pied Wagtail roost and the Peregrine flew over.
Packham came out with 'Look, a Peregrine, flying up there in the sky'
Where was that man educated? And that Martin I'm Gay and the Strachan woman need to find another job because wildlife isn't it!!!!!
As for Roy Dennis, well, a free holiday to Africa to find a Satellite tagged Osprey. Another waste of taxpayers money.
Liked the Cuckoo piece though.

Personally I thought it was a great laugh but I'm clearly in the minority! Not 'quite' as good as the previous week but really enjoyable and they seem to have got into their stride after a dicky few shows. Am glad the beeb are investing in lighter wildlife programmes as well as the more 'hard-core' ones, I think there's room for both. I think from reading the comments here some would only want something like an avian version of the Ascent of Man... on a Friday night after a rough week at work I'd rather have something that was a bit fun, easy to watch and showed some nice wildlife!

I really enjoyed the osprey film, seeing them find the bird in Africa felt more profound than I thought it would - very cool! The Pied Wagtail roost was superb as I really have a thing for wagtails and I would have exclaimed in the same way Chris did if I saw a peregrine there (should he have said, "Ah yes, Falco peregrinus... I expected to see one and a fine example it is."?). Thought Bill Oddie seemed quite restrained really compared to some programmes I've seen him in - was good to see him on the show again.

With all due respect Gaz, could you be any more offensive?
