I never knew dragonflies could lay eggs out of water - Anyone know any more about this?

Cheers
Mike

PS that pink sky is incredible!

Lovely shot of Aeshna cyanea there!

I've not been lucky enough to see it for myself, but the books say that Southern Hawkers will often lay eggs far from water, presumably as a protection from predation. Of the other odonata, Migrant Hawkers will lay into mud and plant stems above the waterline, apparently assuming that water levels will rise by the time they hatch the following spring, though they don't go as far as the Southerns - which [according to Brooks & Lewington] have been seen attempting to lay into lanes, bridges, and even someone's shoes! :-O

A few years ago I watched a Southern Hawker egg laying in my Chard garden. It deposited eggs in moss covered rocks surrounding my pond at least a foot away from the water & also it landed on a wooden fence post & tried to lay eggs into that!
