Bass Strait (1 Viewer)

Whilst coming into port, Barry Beach Marine Terminal, East of Melbourne, I took this at range, the dark stain either side of the small fishing boat are all Short-tailed Shearwater. Otherwise very quiet out there, were working in much deeper water next time out, so weยดll see.

So, I've learnt over the past few days that Wood Ducks come offshore, we had 4 yesterday, 3m &1f and Shy Albatross don't really like shallow water, we're close to the drop off where the depth goes from 90m down to 2600m. Seen a few Arctic Skua (Jaeger) also.

Hi Offman, Wood Duck is a North American species - very unlikely indeed in the Bass Strait.

Wood Duck is a frequent name used for Maned Duck (Chenonetta jubata). I have used this as an opportunity to write to AOS to suggest that Carolina Wood Duck be renamed Chapman's Duck to avoid future confusion. I'll get my coat.... ๐Ÿ˜€

Whilst eBird uses Maned Duck, certainly the Australian Field Guide uses Australian Wood Duck:-

All the best

Paul

I did wonder if it was something like this but I was too lazy to check...

Evening All, down on weather today, they say if you don't like the weather around Melbourne, just wait half an hour.
Any hoo, Arctic Skua (at range), Crested Tern with breakfast, Juvenile C Tern, and two C Tern taking advantage of our Heli deck netting.
