INaturalist has this as American Cockroach. Is that correct/likely in the canaries?

Totally possible, but you need to distinguish it carefully from Periplanetta brunea: they differ mainly on the shape of the cerci (and colour of the pronotum), which are well visible on your photo. I have no adequate literature at hand at the moment, unfortunately. Despite the name, American cockroach is an African species.
The reference for P. brunnea is
BURMEISTER, H.1838. Handbuch der Entomologie. Theod. Chr. Friedr. Enslin, Berlin. Vol. 2 (2): 397-756., page503
I recall seeing there drawings of the cerci (it's the original description of P. brunnea), so it's the one to go to, it's certainly online (I can't find it in my folders right now).
From memory, P. americana has slenderer cerci and P. brunnea has shorter and thicker based cerci, so yours is clearly one of the two :D
