I am looking for the best deal on seed in USA. I used to buy from KMart but I think the budget seed is from China and may have pesticides. It appears Lowes may be the best bet. I mainly feed doves. Thank you for any suggestions.

Frank,
Take a look at http://www.newildbirdfood.com/

I have a lot of Doves here and they love the "Sanctuary Special Blend" bird food from this company.

These folks sell through a lot of local retailers and I've found the price to be very competitive for high quality bird food, better than I could find online.

I did a lot of shopping online and could not find as good a price as I get from an old time feed and grain store 3 miles up the road from me which is very convenient.

What is nice about these folks at New England Bird food company is that you do not have to purchase a blend, they sell the various seeds and nuts by the bag and you can buy what you need and create your own blend depending on what you are feeding.

Not sure Mitch what I should think about this company which you mentioned:

1. Take the "Sanctuary Special Blend" what you are feeding. The birds can like it but the food is far to fat - even in winter we don´t feed our grosbeaks so fat. Fat proportion= 3x sunflower, peanuts, thistle, safflower, tree nuts and one the other side carbohydrate: Millet, canary seed, dried fruits. Not a good ratio!

Just an other example is their "Finch Blend": 2 x fat (sunflower, niyer) 2 x carbohydrate (millet, canary seed). Which bird feeds just 4 different seeds?

2. To your suggested self based blends. I found only 9 different seeds, not much.

Even when I´m not able to find a price on the linked site, I don´t like those food. Maybe they are cheap, but that´s no excuse for this poor blends.

You want see high quality food? Than look here, not sure you may buy this in US:

Or here (Produkte - Vogel -> Körnerfutter -> Waldvogel):

Not cheap, but worth every Cent!

Stonechat1,

Thank You for your information and reply however with all due respect I have to differ with you. It would appear you have a reading comprehension disorder, the gentleman asked specifically about bird feeds in the USA, not Austria.

Secondly, I did not say NE Bird Foods were cheap, I said that I was able to find it for a better price at a local feed distributor than I did online which is more of a pleasant surprise than anything.

Thirdly, I hardly think you understand what birds in the USA require for fat content and nutrients in their feed, here in my area, they require a high fat content, especially the species that stay here the year around in order to not freeze to death. Also during breeding season as depending on location, it may be shorter than in many locals due to environment and weather concerns and birds require a quality food to stay healthy and raise healthy young.

The blended feeds put up by New England Bird Food company are recommended blends from the good people at Cornell labs and specified specifically for the species in this area.

Thank you for your input just the same...

Would agree with Mitch on the above. See if you have a feed store nearby, they usually have a good variety of grain. And down here when I buy 5 or so at a time they give me a discount.

No problem when you don´t agree with me.

Wrong

Is it a problem for you that I live in Austria? Versela Laga is a belgian company, with very good reputation (at least in Europe) by bird breeders and pigeon fanciers. The world famous Loro Parc on Tenerife (http://loroparque2010.homestead.com/), with the largest parrot collection on earth, is feeding food of them. Also you can find sellers in US who are offering them, e.g.:

Correct, you didn´t but I did. The ammount of cheap seeds as sunflower, peanuts and millet let me take this conclusion.
Thirdly, I hardly think you understand what birds in the USA require for fat content and nutrients in their feed, here in my area, they require a high fat content, especially the species that stay here the year around in order to not freeze to death.
In Europe, UK excluded, it´s unusual do feed birds in warm seasons. There´s a lot of food in the nature for them, even if our nature is not as big as yours. Birds in US survive without feeding them in summer also very well. They don´t need it. Jm2c.
Also during breeding season as depending on location, it may be shorter than in many locals due to environment and weather concerns and birds require a quality food to stay healthy and raise healthy young.
Quality food is not a blend with four kind of seeds like they sell it in the "Finch Blend"!

Best Source of Bird Feed

Hi Frank,
Thank you for your Kmart purchases. I just double checked with our buyers and most of our products are made in USA. We do not carry any bird seed made in China. As for the pesticides, we can not track as we buy the grain from multiple farmers.

I hope this helps and hope you will come back as a Kmart customer.
