well done Margaret, worth waiting for ! a fantastic bird to get.:t:

popped in to the loch on my way home from Torness late yesterday afternoon and saw 2 bitterns fly out of the reedbed,,, amazing !
Doubles your chance of seeing one now Delia !

Wow!! Wonderful! Thanks Gus.

Maybe I'll hear one of them booming in the Spring then!!

We can dream.... can't we?;)

Lots of activity at Kinnordy in the last week or so, both Bitterns are being seen on a regular basis as are a group of around a dozen Bearded Tits.
Whooper Swans and Goldeneye are also back along with big numbers of Teal which explode periodically from the Bogbean as do the Snipe.
Other wildfowl include Wigeon, Goosander, Tufted Duck, Shoveler and Gadwall.
Plenty Redwing around and some Fieldfare coming in now too, Water Rails are very vocal and can be seen best from the Gullery Hide at the edge of the reedbeds.
A Ring-tail Harrier has been seen recently as have Sparrowhawk, White-tailed Eagle and a Peregrine.
Biggest surprise this past week was a Hawfinch perched on a Pine tree..a bird I have yet to get on my Angus list.

I was at kinnordy for a short while yesterday hoping to see the bittern/bearded tits, neither showed,as I left alec shepard appeared and I see looking at his blog page 10 bearded tits,1 bittern and the hen harrier put in an appearance,im going to try a 6 hour visit sometime this month

Grrr.... so I heard this afternoon... don't keep rubbing it in Esk Watcher!!!

I see they've put a grit tray out at the side of the reeds, so maybe we'll get some action round there eventually.

Oh well done Gus. Thanks! They don't make it easy to be seen, do they!

I suppose I've got to believe they're there now, haven't I!;) Though I'll not be really impressed until you get both in shot:-O

Nice video, Gus.

I'm hoping on getting to Kinnordy on Sunday. Which hide is best for the Bitterns, and is there a particular area they are seen regularly?

Best hide for the Bitterns tends to be the Gullery hide, directly out in front or in the small bay to the right of the single pine tree.
Expect it to be pretty busy on sunday afternoon as i'm leading the Angus & Dundee Bird Club and local SOC group on an outing to Forfar Loch, Murton Reserve and Kinnordy that day.

Hi Steve

Gus's video seems to show the reed bed directly opposite the Gullery Hide.

EDIT: LOL I cross posted with Gus.
