3 months time we've got:-
Almonds and Corals near Cahuita
Esquinas Forest Lodge
Casa Botanica (Wilsons)
Savegre Hotel
Vista de Valle Plantation Inn, Alajuela (to end the tour)
We've done the Tortuguera, Sarapiqui, Monteverde and Arenal quite a bit so now turning to the South of the country. Hope we have chosen well. Noted on other posts that the Cahuita NP has potential problems with crime so will be very wary (with our guide)
Those destinations should give you a bird-filled trip. The Almonds and Corals I know of is actually between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo and this much closer to those areas than Cahuita. To me, it would make much more sense to bird near the hotel than head to Cahuita National Park not only due to potential crime (as rare as that is) but because you would probably see more birds. They may have chosen that because it is a national park and dont know the area all that well or dont want to bring you to sites that arent in an official protected area. In my opinion, I think you would be better off spending that time in the Puerto Viejo Botanical Garden than the national park as the birding is better. Even birding right along the entrance road to Manzanillo would be better and you should see a lot right at the hotel (forest there should also hold several owls).

Site chosen as one of the cutural compromises I've made with my other half.
First day will be spent in San Jose to see the city. (My eyes will be elsewhere for most of the time I'm sure) And the 'Almonds' for the Bri Bri people.
I'm sure the rest will be much to my satisfaction though.
I've never been there, but I desperately want to go. As it is along the coast it may not be as speciose as the Central Valley. Check out Hacienda Baru.
