Boundaries of the WP in Egypt (1 Viewer)

Specifically, what parts of the Middle East? ;)
Roughly, inclusive of Anatolia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (approx W of Indus).

But note that the study is based on distributions of mammal spp (mostly much less dispersive than bird spp!).

Let us consult the plants and the lowly worms and see what they can tell us. ;)
Kreft & Jetz note that including the Sahara, northern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and significant portions of the Near and Middle East in the African realm is essentially equivalent to incorporating the Saharo-Sindian botanical region.

Overall not surprising that birds and mammals would give different answers to what is more difficult to cross: Sahara or the Mediterranean

WP aside, not sure I would classify most of those countries as being in the Middle East.
Well, the Oxford Dictionary of English defines the Middle East (rather vaguely) as

"an extensive area of SW Asia and northern Africa, stretching from the Mediterranean to Pakistan and including the Arabian peninsula".

Richard

PS: Basically, CENTCOM's AOR!

Fair enough.

Still, I would question the inclusion of North Africa, Armenia, Azerbaijan, etc and certainly Pakistan, into the Middle East.

Taking back to the original topic, i.e. the W.P., BWP would seem to not consider North Africa in the Middle East either ...

The interpretation of the 'Middle East' wrt N Africa seems very variable. eg, the OSME region currently includes Egypt, but until 2006 also included Libya. Porter et al 1996 (Birds of the Middle East) excluded both, but it'll be interesting to see the area of coverage of the forthcoming new edition (Porter & Aspinall 2010). With 100+ new spp, perhaps it now includes (at least) Egypt?
