I am planning to spend roughly one week birdwatching in California, flying in and out of San Francisco. It will be first half of February, I will know the exact dates soon, for now it looks like it could be from Feb 6 to Feb 12. I am looking for company to birdwatch jointly (for the whole week, a few days or even one day), potentially share some costs.

Although I won’t need to travel as a live here, I’d be glad to meet up one day over the weekend and bird together. February is an excellent time as we will still be in peak shore/water bird season!

Great choice! Early February in California is perfect for wintering birds like ducks, shorebirds, and raptors. I highly recommend Monterey Bay for seabirds and even marine mammals. Also, don’t miss Point Reyes and the areas around San Francisco Bay for excellent birding opportunities.

ps. I can’t join, unfortunately, but if you don’t find company, :( check out local birdwatching groups – they often organize tours. Also, bring a scope if you have one – lots of birds stay far out on the water in bays. Quick research on eBird will also help you plan!

Thank you Caroline for the tips!
How would you go about visiting Point Reyes? It looks like a very big area to explore. Are there specific spots, where people seawatch? Unfortunately I cannot have my scope with me but I will have my camera.

It was my pleasure! I am looking forward to maybe getting to see some photos once your trip ends and then getting to bird with you again someday somewhere.
