Walmsley water level management

I went down to the reserve this evening on the high tide to check how the new water level works were coping with the heavy rains.

I've closed the sluices down a bit more now to start to raise levels for the winter.

The spillway at the top of the site was overflowing water down along the old stream bed so that needs to have some more timber stops fitted but the ford was backing water up into the marshes and the new scrape was filling fast.

Hopefully the levels will increase as this rains filters down the valley and it did look as if the waders and wildfowl were having a party in the newly flooded areas. I guess a lot of invertebrates were being brought to the surface as there appeared to be a feeding frenzy going on.

24 Blackwits, 12 greenshank, many teal, snipe & mallard, plus a kingfisher and a rather bewildered hare that tried to swim for safety as it got cut off from its usual habitat.

Adrian.
