Canon 100-400 uv filter? (1 Viewer)

Did you not have the lens hood on? That's stopped everything that might otherwise have threatened the front element on my 100-400mm...

I did not have the lens hood on. I had the lens cap on and the hood reversed, and it received a jolt that, while not damaging the cap, shattered the filter behind it.

So fifteen months later did you buy a filter or not. I am interested as I have to make the same decision as I have just bought a Canon 100-400 lens. Roger

Roger,

I agree with Keith's advice. Stick to keeping the hood in place at all times and don't get a filter.

I bought my lens in 2007 and immediately bought a filter because I thought it would provide added protection, especially when visiting the deserts of Morocco. It was the biggest mistake I made and virtually all of my images were adversly affected. I haven't used a filter since.

Thanks for that advice Robin. I will not be going anywhere like the deserts of Morocco with my lens so will save my money and not invest in a Hoya filter. Regards Roger

I have had problems with filters in the past as Keith probably remembers, and I wouldn't use them again.

I've often wondered why the camera makers dont warn against this.
