That's two lessons some people never learn.

My Mum used to believe that the purpose of a telephoto lens was to take pictures of dots further away. A DSLR with telephoto lens is a great machine but ye canna change the laws of physics.

And practice comes cheap with digital photography. Have fun.

I have always tended to try to 'get information' from birds which are too distant. I used to do this when drawing Bewick's Swans bill patterns using telescopes* (before the days of digital cameras) and had to walk away from some scenarios. I will be doing the same with the camera. I have already had a few situations where I have thought - I wont even bother to get the camera out of the bag. There will be more.

I am having fun and when I get it right I am really pleased. Practice and preparation are two major key factors.

*I actually used a pencil!!

Just to add to the Panamoz cause - I too bought the 7D2 from them about 2 weeks ago and the AF seems to work fantastically so I think we can safely say that they have a good batch.

Bought my 7D2 2 weeks ago and brought it to Spain. It is a massive improvement on my 500D. AF on fast flying birds like swifts is amazing.

Having a few issues with hand holding with static birds with 400 f5.6 as no IS even with higher shutter speeds due to light here in Spain but that is just poor technique.

So far I am really please with it. Make sure you switch it off though as 10 fps soon add up if put it in your bag and shutter release rests on something. 962 frames before I realised what the noise was. Lesson learnt.

Kentucky Warbler, had to MF through some pretty dense brush for that. Very slightly frontfocused. 1/500 - 5.6 - 500 (the light was not even good)

Dark eyed Junco, in grass for a nice change (they winter here) 1/800 -5.6 - 640

Yes, I could run the shutter a little harder but I am pretty pleased with the results I can get from 1/800, generally. I had a killdeer and least sandpiper and was running 1/1600 for them, given their more fluid motion. These ones were all handheld. (I should also add at full size google looses something. Shame that but oh well.)

Forgive my ignorance but I had look on the website and wasn't too sure what I was looking for! Also, how does this get to the camera once the download is done?
Any help here will be appreciated.

EOS utility 3 was available on the 12th, and per the PDF instructions lets you skip that silly step, doing that now as I cannot find my old card reader.

Edit: new DPP also, so full suite.

A fairly big crop at ISO 2500 - the 7D2 images clean-up quite nicely IMO.

Yeah Roy my copy is gathering dust in the cupboard and I am making do with the 70d for now,getting nice results with 70d but it's well slow compared to AF and FPS of 7d2 and just about everything else for that matter.
Been let down to many times now with my 7d2 and I just can't trust it to come up with the AF when needed.
Well Jel of all you with gooduns as its a great camera to use and the ten frames a second sounds so sweet when shooting plus it balances much nicer with my lenses than my old 7d used to and also now my 70d.Think I will just bide my time and maybe pick up a good used one in the near future,can't really sell mine on as I would hate to land someone else with the same problem.
It maybe worth money in years to come if Canon open up a monster museum.
