Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast (16 Viewers)

Thinking of doing a bit of sea watching off Leasowe over high tide this Sunday. Just hoping to get a few things onto the year list if I can. Is there much to be seen at the moment? I was thinking Red-throated Diver, Scoter, Gannet.. is there anything more unusual around? Or am I being optimistic ?

Cheers
Gareth

Gannet very unlikely - need a few days SW gale to even think about them at this time of year. You'd be unlucky not to see RTD and Scoters. There are a few Scaup around, probably best to see them off Hilbre otherwise they may be off Dove Point, Meols (they are sometimes off the groyne). Fresh SW wind forecast isn't ideal - you could really do with a flat calm to see what's on the sea but always a chance of auks, divers, grebes, if you are very lucky maybe Long-tailed Duck or Velvet Scoter but no reports of those recently. Good chance of Goldeneye and Red-breasted Mergansers but no doubt you will see those at West Kirby.
Good luck!!

Thank you both. I know a bit about the Wirral and I have been checking the website. It's always useful to have advice from those in the know. I think I'll give Leasowe a miss and try to get to Hoylake for the roost and sneak in a quick look at West Kirby for the Mergansers.

Cheers,
Gareth

Any idea when the next big tide is? I think the Wirral is due a visit from me :p

Still good numbers of waders and gulls at Hoylake today and the Brents are roosting / feeding just off the saltmarsh at West Kirby. Scaup seem to be "regular" off Leasowe lighthouse at the moment ( + Kingfisher on the Birket nearby).

Slav Grebe showing well today at Astbury. Played it cool and waited for better weather than we've had since it turned up on Monday.
