Fourth egg started to hatch this morning.

At 10:13 hrs, after the egg had been hatching all morning, the female reached into the egg and ripped the emerging hatchling out. It then flew off with it before returning without it. End of story for number four.

I have only been watching this webcam for a few days. I don't know how long the other chicks have been hatched, but it looks like quite a while. I don't think number 4 would have lasted long, as its larger siblings would have out-competed it for food. Mother bird must have instinctively known this. Gruesome, but interesting!
