Coal Tits abandoned nestbox (1 Viewer)

Hi there as a newby I hope someone can help. I had two coal tits who took over my nestbox 3 weeks ago. Lots of activity all day long everyday. Came home today in lovely sunshine to find the box quite stuck with what looked like quite solid nesting material. Worried that birds or eggs may still be in there unable to get out I pulled a 5 inch long piece of material out of the hole. I have no cameras and didn’t want to poke around in there, but the birds are nowhere to be seen, what could have happened, and what should I do ??

HI mercy, welcome to the forum on behalf of the staff and moderators. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. However, in this situation I can’t offer much help, I would leave the nest alone and see if they return over the next day or two.

Welcome to Birdforum.

You shouldn’t interfere with a live nest - it is actually against the Wildlife Act to do so. Poking about in the nestbox will put the birds off and could cause them to abandon the nest. I would leave it alone.

It seems a bit early for eggs. Also, even if they have started to build a nest, it is quite common for that to get interrupted for some time. After all, they need to time their breeding with the food being available. They might come back days later to finalise it. I have seen that happen myself with Blue Tits.

In any case, don't touch anything now.
