Common Nighthawks in daylight? (1 Viewer)

I'd been told before I went to the States that you frequently seen Common Nighthawks by day but it wasn't until I saw a flock of 30 Nighthawks hawking for insects among Black Terns at one o'clock in the afternoon on a bright summer's day at Rice Lake Minnesota this year that I believed it.

When I was in Florida many year ago Common Nighthawks in flocks appeared from nowhere every time it clouded over - any time of day!

Yes, Nighthawks are not strictly nocturnal. Nightjars, on the other hand, such as Whip-poor-wills, are almost never seen flying during the day. Nighthawks have somewhat smaller eyes than nightjars, reflecting their partly diurnal habits.
