Also, forgot to mention that we had a close encounter with a pod of 6-7 Asian Finless Porpoise on the boat last weekend. Very cool to see up close. My niece was able to get a photo of one attached below. I've seen them before in Jinshitan (not much though) and they are common around Laotieshan where the Yellow Sea and Bohai Bay meet.

Yes, it has been a good week :t:

Country Club March 15, 2016

A quick hour at this excellent migrant place after work. We didn't expect much but had a good time regardless. I don't often see Rustic Bunting in breeding plumage so it was nice to run into a handful of beautifully marked birds among the more common winter dressed ones. Having trouble uploaded Rustic Bunting picture so will upload as pdf.

Tom,
Many congratulations on completing the second edition of your book... being a proud owner of the first edition, I know for sure that the second edition will be an invaluable resource for anyone birding in Liaoning and, in fact, anywhere in NE China!
A brilliant contribution to the understanding of bird distribution in China. :t:

Field trip yesterday hoping for more visible migration. Had groups of White Wagtail, Chinese Bulbul, and White-cheeked Starling heading north overhead in the early morning walk to my garage so thought it would be a good day to spend just under an hour on a sea wall seeing birds migrate high above. By the time the trip came the wind had turned and not much was moving. Did see a group of migrating White-cheeked Starling and the first Dunlin of the year flying low over the mudflats.

On the way home after work I stopped dead in my tracks at the sound of a Varied Tit calling loudly from a tree steps from my front door. It was mixed in with a small group of Japanese Tit.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds March 24, 2016

Too lunch break at the ponds today. No Common Shelduck to be seen. Must have left in the last 48 hours. It felt like it was between waves of ducks with many of the ponds completely empty.

I love the Kentish Plover picture below because you can see the near one coming in to steal whatever the far one found. Also, the Vega Gull wasn't injured even though it was sitting weird like that. Totally different staged of molt in the Dunlin photographed below. Both will turn into the gorgeous Sakhalina ssp that can be found here on the coast in huge numbers in late April and early May.

Wafangdian (Santaizi) March 25, 2016

A different schedule last Friday meant that I could take a long field trip with some students in the afternoon. We went to the crane/stork place near Wafangdian not knowing exactly what would be there on March 25. Turns out all the cranes/storks are already gone and there were no geese or swans also. In fact, we only identified 12 species in 1.5 hours driving around the area. It was still a fun time off-campus for the students and now we know that late March is not a great time to visit this site. We also had some brief excitement when our bus slipped off the road on a sandy path. We were thankfully able to push it out, see photo below. We did have very close looks at some Garganey. We were in the small bus photographed below and with its tinted windows the Garganey were not too spooked when we stopped right beside them as they rested in a drainage canal.

Spring is here! Even though Jinshitan always remains stubbornly cold compared to places around here, (it's always the last part of Dalian to warm up and usually warms up slower even than Harbin because of the ocean here) I had an awesome hour and a bit at the Country Club this morning. The internet always proudly proclaims 12 degrees but it is much lower on the ground usually.

I believe I found a Black-throated Thrush this morning there. No rufous on the brow or tail that I can see. I know the throat patch can be misleading. Please see the photos below and comment if you think it could still be Red-throated. Both are rare but a Black-throated would be a second or third record I believe so I don't have experience with them. It was a gorgeous morning -- even the Mallard were posing!

Spring migration beginning to get going here, let the good times roll! My family and I are leaving China at the end of June so this will be my last migration on this wonderful peninsula. The timetable is beginning to sink in so I'm not taking any birding time during migration for granted.

Hi Tom,
Looks like a good Black-throated Thrush to me.. congratulations! Black-throated is the scarcest of the 4 winter thrushes in Beijing (after Naumann's, Red-throated and Dusky), so it's always a good day to see one here, too..
T

Nice find, Tom! Send them up my way!

I will miss your reports from Dalian as well as your help with ID on new birds for me. I suppose it is too much to hope for someone to take over your reporting from there.
