Desert Island Binocular. (2 Viewers)

I think I could handle being stuck on a Desert Island with just a pair of Steiners but my Beloved wants to go shopping in England tomorrow.

Best 'Be Prepared'.

Happy New Year!

Got the binos (still in a box somwhere, might be a model older than yours), have a Laguiole knife bought decades ago on holiday in France, and I have a 5513 from the last production run in 1989 which I hardly ever wear.
That leaves the booze. I am intrigued.

Penderyn Peated Single Malt Welsh Whisky.

Compared to its Scottish bretheren it is much lighter, doesn't have the (often) too intense Islay smokiness and is a delightful tiple, especially on a day like today when the River Vyrnwy has burst its banks, the fields below us are well flooded and more is on the way.

Every cloud though...... the river flows downstream to Shrewsbury where it swirls together with the mighty River Severn and floods the very place my Beloved wishes to engage in some serious retail therapy.

Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

Allow me ... ;)

BTW: Encouraged by this thread and Mssrs. Canip and Roberts I have just ordered a brandspankingnew IOR 7x40 B/GA from Romania. A small report/introduction to follow if and when they arrive.

Now that is something to look forward to.

I have used these bino's in the distant past. They are optically superb and clothed in a body that is made out of ex-Romanian railway tracks and Euclid dumper tyres.

In other words, indestructable. And bloody heavy.

I'd really like to give that Penderyn a try sometime and it sounds like you've not had Bunnahabhain 18 before, as it's much gentler.
Still, for a desert isle bottle that could last a lot longer I'd much prefer the strength of Ardbeg Corryvreckan or Lagavulin 12 to pair up with the Leica BN.

tough question

any would be better than now
I would like higher mag to search for rescue ships/planes
but also lower mag wide FOV for the jungle areas
definitely heavy duty and indestructible

indestructible would be the chief requirement
maybe my old fujinon 10x70s

How lovely you should mention Bunnahabhain, you clearly have a nose (and a wallet) for the nectar of the God's! My Sons bought me a bottle for my 50th birthday and it is a beautiful Malt.

Memo to self..... 'If you ever return to this mortal world and have three sons, do not introduce them to Single Malt. It is a foolish thing to do'.

The buggers have a fondness for the grain that has seen my stocks deplete with a rapidity that cannot be blamed on me alone......or can it?

Lagavulin has long been the family tipple but a new(ish) kid on the block is fast becoming a favourite. I give you 'The Hearach Single Malt' from the Isle of Harris and a natural progression from their truly outstanding Isle of Harris Gin.

The brainchild of a man from St Louis. God Bless you Burr!

I actually do live on an island with no stores or businesses. We have several pairs of binoculars, telescopes, a drone and our camera gear. I would have to go check the different brands. I have. People give them away here and I just grab them off the table.

The most I've ever spent on a single bottle has been about 250, with most of them being between 80-150, but I still spend less on them than many spend on simple beer, soda pop, or even bottled water, if you can grasp that! I don't drink whisky like wine; it does not get emptied just because I opened it!

With Lagavulin 12>16 (not a typo; the 12 is more expensive, for good reason, and much harder to find), Bunnahabhain 18>12, Ardbeg Corryvreckan>Ugeadail or 10, Highland Park 18>12. Now I've got to look for both Penderyn and Hearach!

Can you expand a bit on that "People give them away here .... " statement?

What am I missing?

Fujinon 25x150 so I can find the shipping lanes, build a raft, get rescued, and enjoy a shot of whisky with PatR.
Hi,

close, but I'd prefer this one and some nice higher mag EPs... also 90deg is much more comfy for the night sky than straight.

if I were stranded on a desert island I think
I would be looking for rescue ships/planes more than the dark sky
thus straight better
