Discouraging Rooks and Jackdaws from feeders! (1 Viewer)

Hi I was looking for some advice on how to deter Rooks and Jackdaws from coming and stealing the bird food in my feeders. I have 3 seed feeders and a niger feeder situated on different branches on our 3 fruit trees and every Spring/Summer there always seems to be a few (up to a dozen usually) Rooks (lesser numbers of Jackdaws) that come and try to knock off the feeders which are only a few feet off the ground. I've tried re-positioning the feeders so they can't sit in the branch and reach them but they still cause a bit of a nuisance. It doesn't help also that we keep hens and my Mum puts out hen food (which needless to say the hens ignore anyway) and our neighbours immediately next door to us and in the flat alongside chuck out food which attracts not only corvids but also gulls.

My parents want me to take down the feeders permanently which I'd absolutely hate as I'm a great bird lover and love feeding my garden birds. Is there any way that I can get them to stop? Thanks in advance, Nicola.

Hi Nicola, I have only just joined and read your post. Hopefully I am still able to help.

I had the same problem and found this idea on the net:

Stopped the problem and the small birds fly in and out with ease.

If you would like some measurements I can go to my allotment tomorrow. Just make sure the cup hooks/roof are high enough to hang the feeders, I forgot and had to rebuild :eek!::-C

Please don't hesitate to ask if you would like more info.

P.S. The roof and floor were made from pine NOT ply.

Peter.
