Help- advice? Squirrel-proof feeder is attracting squirrels!
The Droll Yankee flipper bird feeder has great videos online. When a squirrel hops on, the feeder spins them off.
But… birds spill so much seed, that the squirrels are happily eating seed on the ground all day.
5 squirrels at once- more than I’ve ever had.
But none of them tried the bird feeder
I tried attaching a tray underneath to catch seed, but it didn’t work well.
Suggestions?
Thanks!

Welcome to the squirrel wars!
Birds are messy eaters, so spillage is par for the course.
You can put in a large baffle (20" diameter) on your feeder post, with a large seed catching tray above it.
That will cut the wastage, as the ground feeding birds such as Cardinals will be happier eating off the tray than from a perch.
Plus you can take the batteries out of the flipper.
However, don't expect your squirrels to take this lying down, they will try to jump down on the feeder if possible, or to squirm past the baffle.
Historically, they usually find a way.

I have found that baffle height is important if there was too large a gap above the baffle the squirrels could leap over it and grab the post. I have 100% success with a 1-inch pole and a baffle if there are no shrubs or trees nearby for the squirrel to leap from.

Hi mldr and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I'm sorry not to be able to help, as I don't have a problem with squirrels here.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
